Superbike, Lausitzring, Race 2: Complicated day for Tom Sykes
The English driver slips on the treacherous asphalt and finishes twelfth
Superbike, Pirelli German Round, Race 2. Tom Sykes' declared objective for the second race on the Lausitzring circuit was to win to make a decisive push to the gap in the standings towards his teammate and leader Jonathan Rea, but things didn't go as he expected.
The potential to get the better of the rivals was there, unfortunately the weather messed up all the values, forcing the riders to review their strategies and take some risks given the dangers of a very slippery track.
Immediately after the start, delayed for 40 minutes, Tom Sykes crashed while occupying second position behind Rea, but fortunately managed to get back on his ZX-10R, finishing his race in 12th place, which allows him if not other than gaining some championship points, even if the gap on his teammate has risen to +47, with 150 points up for grabs. “The bike set-up wasn't working well and I think I exceeded the limit in the first race. We need to look for a small improvement in set-up in the dry, but a bigger progress in the wet. This is not good in one respect, but I also know that I can win races in the wet. It's about finding the correct balance and feedback for the rider, which I don't have at the moment in those conditions. I'm sure we can find it” – he said Tom Sykes – “In racing everything is possible and everything changes quickly. Yesterday I was 26 points behind, today I was 47. The positive thing is that in the last three races the gap has become 47 points, but three races ago I was at 71 and today we still have three rounds left to go."
