Moto2 2015 Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix – Alex Rins achieved his first career victory in Moto2 in Indianapolis in his debut year in the middle category of the world championship. The Team Pons driver, after scoring pole position yesterday, got the better of world championship leader Johann Zarco and our own Franco Morbidelli, on his first career podium.

Now in the world championship standings Zarco leads with 199 points against 128 for Rins and 125 for the reigning champion Esteve Rabat, fifth at the finish line today. Next week we'll be back on track immediately in Brno, for the eleventh race of the season.

Race report

The riders of the Moto2 class are ready to leave for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, the tenth race of the 2015 world championship. Yesterday in qualifying the fastest was the Spaniard Alex Rins, who had scored his second pole of the season. The Team Pons driver will start from the first spot (located on the right of the grid) ahead of his compatriot and reigning champion Esteve Rabat and the Finn Mika Kallio.

Second row for the Swiss Thomas Luthi, the German Jonas Folger and the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami. Franco Morbidelli (the only Italian on the track, given that Simone Corsi and Lorenzo Baldassarri will only return to Brno, due to the problems of Forward Racing, which saw the legal arrest of owner Giovanni Cuzari) will start from the third row with the ninth time.
He will have world leader Johann Zarco and British Sam Lowes, Speed Up driver, on his right.

Alex Marquez, 2014 Moto3 champion and brother of Marc, reigning MotoGP champion, will instead start from the fifth row, thirteenth fastest. Like that of Moto3, this race has also been declared wet, the riders will therefore be free to choose tires and will be able to return to the pits during the race to change them. Now everything is ready, twenty-five laps to go for 104.25 km. The traffic lights go out, the fastest at the start is the reigning champion Esteve Rabat, who started ahead of Rins and Kallio.

Positions change immediately, in the end it is Rins who takes the lead, ahead of Rabat, Simon, Syahrin, Folger and Kallio. The Malaysian from Team Petronas Raceline Malaysia is unleashed, taking command of the operations ahead of Lowes, Simon, Zarco, Rins and Folger.

Lowes attacks, taking the lead, while Rabat loses positions, now eleventh and behind Franco Morbidelli. Positions constantly change, while Julian Simon, author of a great start, slips at turn 9.

World championship leader Johann Zarco takes the lead after a series of very decisive overtakings. He is followed by Aegerter, Syahrin, Rabat (recovering) and Sam Lowes. Aegerter attempts the attack, but Zarco responds, with the Malaysian Syahrin in third. Rabat meanwhile sets the fastest lap, the top three are now in the sights.
Aegerter attacks again, this time resisting Zarco's response, while Rabat moves into third position. The fastest laps are those of Rabat and Rins. Contact between Lowes and Kallio, with the latter having the worst and seeing his race end prematurely. Sandro Cortese also falls, with no physical consequences for him either.

Rins is unleashed, who with a double overtaking in a few corners moves into second position. Morbidelli is also very strong, setting the fastest lap of the race. Halfway through the race, Rins takes the lead, followed by Zarco, Aegerter and Rabat, with Morbidelli fifth.

Last km of the race, Aegerter is still in the lead, followed by Rins and Zarco, with Morbidelli fourth and ahead of Rabat. Two laps to go, Rins takes the lead and seems to be able to extend his lead and go on to win the first race of his career in Moto2 in his debut year.

Last lap, Rins goes on to win the first race in the medium category, on the podium are world championship leader Johann Zarco and our own Franco Morbidelli, who after coming close to him at the Sachsenring takes the first podium of his career. Aegerter, Rabat and Luthi follow.
