Fonsi Nieto's Aprilia moved ahead of everyone in free practice on Friday morning, overtaking Marco Melandri, 2nd, by just 14 thousandths and Roberto Rolfo's Honda, 3rd with a gap of almost 2 tenths.
The other Italians are a little further behind, with Franco Battaini in sixth position and Roberto Locatelli in ninth.
