Superbike – Race 2 Donington – Checa winner, Melandri 2nd, disqualification for Biaggi
After the great emotions of Race 1, the engines are rekindled for a new show on the Donington Park track. The temperatures have risen, so the cards are shuffled in search of the new winner of the English round.
At the start of Race 2, Haslam got off to a great start and took first place, followed by Checa, Camier and Haga, while Biaggi was tenth. During the second lap, communication from the race direction: Biaggi himself will have to do a ride through due to the early start. In the meantime, up front, Checa starts to turn really fast and prepares to pass the Englishman from BMW: the overtaking takes place at the end of the third lap and the Spaniard starts pushing in an attempt to escape alone. Marco Melandri, however, begins to recover positions and appears behind Camier.
On the fifth lap the Yamaha rider overtakes the Aprilia Englishman, and subsequently engages in a tussle with Haslam as well to go after Checa in first position. But then Haslam made a mistake and lost several positions, leaving Camier and Melandri competing for second place. In the meantime, Max Biaggi does not complete the ride through within the scheduled number of laps and is shown a black flag which forces him to retire: a truly difficult weekend for the Corsaro.
On the tenth lap Carlos Checa firmly leads with two and a half seconds ahead of his rivals. Lascorz also put in a good performance, bringing his Kawasaki to fourth place. Nice duel also between the two Britons Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam, with the Englishman from BMW passing the Honda rider. Camier and Melandri also continue to duel for second position, but neither manages to catch Checa. And just with eight laps to go, Camier effectively attacks the driver from Ravenna and goes after the Spaniard in first position. However, Melandri doesn't seem to give in to overtaking and doesn't let the Englishman go easily.
And in fact, with five laps to go, Camier slightly loses the front, so Melandri takes advantage of the mistake and moves into second position again, this time laying the foundations to really go after Checa. The driver from Ravenna, in fact, starts to lap very fast, but Checa responds by recovering tenths. The Spaniard then flies towards the deserved victory, while Melandri takes the second step of the podium. Third place for Camier, who brings an encouraging result back to the Aprilia garage after Biaggi's disappointing performance.
