MotoGP fuel of the future – The MotoGP World Championship is racing towards the future and from 2024 it will switch to sustainable fuels, launching a new global era with zero carbon emissions.

MotoGP has a unique position as one of the most popular and technologically advanced sports in the world, it is a racing “laboratory” fueled by innovation and development.

With global sales totaling 60 million units, two-wheeled transportation is a necessity for a huge portion of the population, with over two billion motorcycles on the world's roads.

Two wheels have a vital role in the quest for cleaner, safer and greener mobility, with the power to make an incredible contribution to the world's need to reduce carbon emissions, increase sustainability and fight climate change.

By 2024, fuel in all MotoGP classes will be at least 40% non-fossil-based

By 2027, fuel in all MotoGP classes will be 100% non-fossil-based

These future fuels can be used in a standard internal combustion engine and will be created in the laboratory, using components provided by a carbon capture scheme or derived from biomass as well as resulting in significant savings in relative fossil-derived energy terms. In addition to this, fuel suppliers will progressively introduce the use of renewable energy in the production of their fuel.

The Moto2 and Moto3 classes will continue to have a single fuel supplier and will also introduce partially sustainable fuel in 2024. Both categories will switch to 2027% sustainable fuel in 100, as will also happen for the MotoGP class.

Statements Jorge Viegas, FIM President 100% sustainable MotoGP fuel

“I am really proud of this announcement after many months and years of negotiations with oil companies and manufacturers: we have now reached an agreement. This will allow MotoGP™ to be the leader in this true sustainable revolution. We really want to show all motorcycle manufacturers that it is possible to have fun but with sustainable fuels. We hope by 2027 to have completely eliminated the presence of carbon fuels in our competitions, demonstrating that – although racing represents a small part of emissions – we must be the main actors of this change. Thanks to all stakeholders in the negotiations, we can now announce this good news.”

Statements Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports 100% sustainable MotoGP fuel

“We are very proud to communicate this incredible new experience and we want to thank the FIM, MSMA, IRTA, our manufacturers and fuel suppliers for their great support in taking this very important step towards a more sustainable world. Together, MotoGP™ will be a very important actor for climate change and greater sustainability. Motorcycles represent a vital asset for society. Sustainable fuels are a key to creating an accessible and viable path to a more environmentally friendly way impacting billions of people and with so many different fuel producers committed to this global impact is assured. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.”
