The Sachsenring's first appearance on the world championship calendar dates back to 1961 and from then on the fast German road circuit, as it was at the time, has become one of the most popular events in the championship. However, it was a very dangerous circuit which has not hosted a GP since 1972. Completely renovated, it returned to the calendar in 1998, as one of the slowest tracks, with an average lap speed of 143 km/h. With the changes introduced in 2000, the average speed rose to 150 km/h, reaching the current 159 km/h after the last revision in 2001. In any case, the route, which is traveled in an anti-clockwise direction, remains the entire first part is narrow and tortuous and requires good engine performance especially at medium speeds. On the other hand, the rear section is very fast with long corners that require good lateral grip from the tires.
