Great performance from the Pesaro rider, fear for Marquez, victim of a very bad fall

Valentino Rossi (in the photo) pulled out his "claws" and after the "bad" nineteenth time this morning, he showed off a great performance in his "Mugello" this afternoon, achieving the second best time in Free Practice 2 of the Grand Prix of Italy Tim riding the YZR-M1 Factory, immediately behind his team-mate, who beat him on the last lap by just 34 thousandths.

The nine-time world champion entered the track highly motivated, immediately setting very interesting times. In the end the former Ducati rider was nominated FIM environmental ambassador, finished with a time of 1:48.409. A great response from the Pesaro player, who wants to demonstrate in front of his fans that he can still have his say against opponents who are dominating at the start of the season.

As mentioned, Lorenzo mocked him under the checkered flag, for a fight at Yamaha which promises "sparks" in view of Sunday's GP. Yamaha confirms itself at the Top on this track also with Cal Crutchlow, third with the M1 of Team Tech 3.

Nicky Hayden also did well, fourth and first Ducati on the track. The American brought his GP13 ahead of Dani Pedrosa's Honda, who finished fifth, 1.008 from the top. However, there was a big scare for his team-mate Marc Marquez, who fell at the end of the finishing straight after his Honda went off the inside curb due to a skid. He was transported to the medical center and appears to have no fractures, but there is no "official" news yet.

Returning to the timesheets, Andrea Iannone also did well, sixth and ahead of his teammate Andrea Dovizioso. The two Ducati riders precede Stefan Bradl's Honda and Randy de Puniet's CRT. the ART of Team Aspar. Michele Pirro closes the Top Ten, here with the "laboratory" Ducati.

Bad fall also for the other rookie, Bradley Smith. The British rider from Team Tech 3 appears to have suffered arm problems. We will keep you updated on both Marquez and Smith.

Marquez most likely risked the podium with this tumble!
Even if with the weather being so variable we risk not understanding anything until Sunday.
I'm happy for Rossi, I appreciate this burst of pride, he managed to lap under 1" on this track, I lapped above 50 minutes with the sun...
But I'm not sure it's a good sign that both official Yamaha riders are pulling, are they checking how they're doing?

I leave you an interview from the pre press conference.

      to yet another question:

“valentino is another level of competition or drivers compared to the old rivals and blah blah blah..”

valid answer: (if I translated correctly)

“but for me it's not correct to talk about a higher or lower level than the others, it's different.

certainly the young people are very strong, including cal.

they are the new model.. it's like when they make a new model out of an old car, it's always better.

What has changed is the way of driving, which has changed a lot in recent years. Now we have to do some different tricks on the bike which are more difficult for an old rider like me"

as always with elegance and irony and this time also an unexpected humility.

      then he explained the differences..

great mike, continue these goodies.. ;)

When I hear someone say that before there were no strong opponents... well how can I put it... I feel like giving a headbutt "between cigghia and nasu" as they say in my area.... ;)

In the "cold" the Yamahas are fine, the problem is understanding whether the temperatures will rise and by how much for Saturday and Sunday.

The times set in FP2 are already good if compared to last year's, which were 2-3 tenths faster than this year's; but in 2012 they had about 10° more ambient temperature and a track that was certainly slightly more rubberised.

The Hondas work much better with temperatures around 25°, while the Yamahas perform less well in the heat, at least this has been seen in the past GPs; we will need to understand who will be able to best manage the tires brought to this circuit by Bridgestone.

Today both Lorenzo and Rossi did free practice, very much based on race pace, with a constant pace and continuous improvements exit after exit.

This means that both they and the track conditions improved lap after lap and despite the tires having more and more mileage out of each outing, they made constant improvements.

The work done by Yamaha is certainly good, but Honda will probably be able to fill the gap at least a little.

One thing I noticed was that Lorenzo's Yamaha, I think in T3 on corner exit, was much more stable than Rossi's. The driving style of the two seemed quite different to me, it seemed to me that Lorenzo was bending much more and using other trajectories, narrower at the exit on the internal curb before widening in some corners, however the performance of the two was quite similar, let's hope they continue so both of them, it would be nice to see them driving next to each other on Sunday, also to compare driving styles.

Marquez was very lucky, he fell in a very bad place, and I think it's mostly the fault of a poorly modulated braking at the fastest point of the track where you can reach up to 340km/h, I hope that if he races he tries to go less hard at that point because at Mugello you always risk taking a bad beating.

But….Smith?? do we know anything more?

Nothing official, I think we'll have to wait until tomorrow, given that I haven't seen any news on motogp.com it's probably nothing serious.
There's a lot of attention focused on Marque, Smith they forgot.
