Surprisingly, Colin Edwards set the best time in the last round of MotoGP testing at Motegi, the venue for the premier class Japanese Grand Prix. The American of Monster Yamaha Tech 3 set the best time in 2'01"841, preceding Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha Team) and Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro Team), with the Australian leading the standings until final minutes of the tests. This trio was the fastest in the wet, with their opponents further behind.

Fourth is Jorge Lorenzo, followed by Chris Vermeulen and Nicky Hayden who are comfortable in the wet as is Sete Gibernau, positive eighth. In tenth position we find Dani Pedrosa ahead of teammate Andrea Dovizioso, while Loris Capirossi did not go beyond 13th position.

Niccolò Canepa, Marco Melandri and James Toseland close the ranking, with the Genoese Pramac Ducati rider consistently placed in the top ten at the start.
