MotoGP: Exclusive interview with Mario Lega who talks about the world championship that has just started and the Rossi Ducati crisis
We need more heart from Rossi, Stoner led over the problems
We had the pleasure of interviewing exclusive Mario Lega, 250 World Champion in 1977 riding the Morbidelli, today a journalist collaborating with prestigious national newspapers. His experience allows him to "see" and "read" where many cannot; we asked him about the MotoGP world championship that had just started which saw Jorge Lorenzo's victory in Qatar and the Rossi Ducati debacle, a bike that won with Stoner and which now not only no longer wins, but is light years away from the podium. Here's what he told us.
First of all welcome Mario, after the first MotoGP race in Qatar who do you think is the favorite to fight for the title Stoner or Lorenzo?
“The fight seems restricted to the pair Lorenzo Stoner with Pedrosa at the window to take advantage of any skirmishes between the two. Who did you see better in terms of riding between the two Hondas and the Spaniard's M1?
“Yamaha without a doubt, Stoner and Pedrosa rode well but there is always the unknown of this year's tires which seem to disadvantage the bikes of the winged manufacturer (chattering included)”
In your opinion, how was the spectacle offered by the MotoGP race? boring or better than last year's?
“The show was better, not due to the inclusion of the CRTs put in by Dorna just to not let Rossi finish last (LOL), but due to a substantial balance with the satellite Yamahas growing and on other tracks perhaps closer to the leading group , still fun even if there was no melee.”
Rossi-Ducati: in your opinion, were Valentino's words said to bring about an immediate split or to shake up the environment?
“I think to shake up the environment. which however was already quite a bit shaky, it's not as if the Borgo Panigale technicians were sitting idle, or perhaps to defend his ego who had never known humiliations of this level even at the beginning of his career . While he took credit for having "made" Yamaha without being an engineer, today he is unable to give indications for improvement and claims that he is not an engineer. Which of the two versions should be taken into consideration?"
How do you explain this lack of results from the Italian couple to date?
“First of all, Rossi never chose Ducati, after being kicked out by Yamaha it was the only opportunity he had (in fact he declared: it was easy to sign with Ducati). After Preziosi's compliments on how he knew how to analyze the data and consequently find the solutions, they find themselves still struggling with the driving position, he is unable to load the front end and makes the tank lengthen to stay further back, a contradiction that the It says a lot about the team's state of confusion. If, as he claims, they have not yet fulfilled his requests to make a bike that is stable, fast, easy to handle, has traction, respects the tires, etc. all that remains is to pass the drawing board to Geremy Burgess who will design a frame, knowing full well how Valentino wants it, who will then have Ducati pay for it if it really works."
In your opinion, where should we intervene to improve the situation? on the rider's riding style or on the bike or on both?
“If I knew the solution I would rush to Bologna to submit it to Claudio Domenicali, Meanwhile, more heart would be needed on the part of the rider, Stoner rode over problems and was committed even after bloody crashes, Ducati churned out more material in one year than in its entire history, annoying Stoner himself who had all requests rejected for budgetary reasons. DORNA'S VERSION – Carmelo Ezpeleta is not sitting idle, Valentino Rossi is needed in the championship, even more so if he is a winner.
