On the first day of MotoGP free practice on the Estoril track, in the Portuguese GP, Casey Stoner obtained first position with a time of 1'38.218. The young Australian rider from Team Honda LCR preceded the Honda of Nicky Hayden and the KR211V of Kenny Roberts Jr. Stoner achieved his best time on the fifteenth lap of Free Practice 2.

“I have decided to put aside all the pressure and stress of recent times and focus only on this weekend. I don't want to overdo it and try to do my job as best as I can. In the last few races things didn't go right; in Japan we made some mistakes in the set up and now we are working hard not to repeat our mistakes. The track was very dirty and slippery today even though many bumps have been eliminated with the new asphalt. In practice the track is nicer now but there is less grip."
