Dutch GP MotoGP Free Practice 2 – The MotoGP class riders took to the track in Assen for Free Practice 2 of the Dutch Grand Prix with a "knife between their teeth".

The weather, which doesn't bode well for tomorrow, meant that everyone was trying to get into the Top Ten, which allows access to the final qualifying phase, Q2.

The session, which also experienced a small phase with some drops of rain, was a real "Time Attack", which saw Maverick Vinales excel, taking his Yamaha M1 ahead of everyone with a time of 1:33.130 (below the circuit record held by Marc Marquez, who lapped in 1'33.617).

The ex-Suzuki Spaniard preceded his brandmate and rookie Jonas Folger (Team Monster Tech0.367) by 3s, who in turn is ahead of the Honda of reigning champion Marc Marquez, 0.652s behind.

Andrea Dovizioso, winner of the last two Grands Prix (Mugello and Barcelona) took the Ducati Desmosedici GP17 to fourth position, ahead of the Honda of Cal Crutchlow, fresh from his contract renewal with Honda LCR.

Valentino Rossi took the sixth fastest time right at the end of the session with a "breathtaking effort". The champion from Pesaro continued the comparisons between the "old" and the new Yamaha chassis, the one tested in the Barcelona tests. A decision on which to use will be made only after carefully analyzing the data with the team.

Rossi precedes the Pramac Racing Ducati GP17 of Danilo Petrucci, the fastest of Free Practice 1. Also in the Top Ten are Yamaha rookie Johann Zarco, Alvaro Bautista with the Ducati GP16 of Team Aspar and Dani Pedrosa, with the Honda of Team Repsol .

Momentarily out of direct access to Q2 (although there is still FP3 to be played, weather permitting) Jorge Lorenzo, who finished fourteenth, behind Aleix Espargarò's Aprilia and ahead of his brand mates Scott Redding and Loris Baz.

Andrea Iannone, who has the Suzuki evolution chassis, finished seventeenth. For the former Ducati rider it was also a fall without consequences.

Bha I don't understand what data is taken for the circuit record.

    Absolute data:
    Fastest Lap 2015 Valentino ROSSI (ITA) 1'32.627 176.5 m/h

Circuit Record Marc MARQUEZ (SPA) 1'33.617 174.6 Km/h

    Best Pole 2015 Valentino ROSSI (ITA) 1'32.627 176.5 Km/h

    2016 data:
Best Lap Andrea DOVIZIOSO (ITA) 1'33.308 175.2 Km/h

The time set by Vinales is the record for an FP2 but it is not the fastest lap set on the Assen circuit by MotoGP, furthermore this session had a real time attack at the end similar to Q2 with the best riders with the soft tires on both the front and rear like Vinales or at least with the soft on the rear, so it's not a time set in race configuration but in qualifying.

From morning to afternoon they lowered their times by a second, and looking at previous seasons it is in line with what has been shown, they are half a second faster than what was done in previous years at the same time, but only Vinales and a little Folger they are faster, the others are in line with last season's times.

The circuit record (fastest lap) remains the one set by Rossi in 2015, in which they had a completely dry weekend and therefore the times continued to drop.

Vinales then Marquez and then perhaps Rossi are the fastest on the pace, but with Rossi there could be other riders who haven't lined up so many laps on that pace though.

For now, Vinales is the fastest and he was both with the medium on the rear and with the hard on the rear, while he had a medium on the front.

During the "record" lap he used soft front and soft rear.

The thing that should worry his opponents is that he did the laps from 3rd in the rankings down with the hard tire on the rear.
