It's official, Marco Melandri will compete in the 2009 season riding the Hayate Racing Team's Kawasaki ZX-RR. The decision was made after the rider from Ravenna had tested the bike in recent days in the three days of MotoGP night tests in Qatar, on the Losail circuit. The performances hadn't been very good but this still didn't demoralize the man from Ravenna. This was confirmed to MCN by his manager Alberto Vergani who thus dissolved any reservations about his client's participation in the 2009 world championship. Here are the words of the manager of the former Ducati rider.

“Marco will be competing. He decided today that he will move forward. He tested the bike in Qatar and said the new bike wasn't that bad. If you can solve a problem with the rear grip you could be reasonably competitive. He decided to run because he didn't feel like staying still for a year. Even though the bike may not be at the highest level, for him it was better to try than to stay at home.
He spent a couple of days thinking after Qatar, and nothing is signed yet, but he decided to race. He is aware of the situation. He knows that he must suffer a little. And it will be a hard and difficult season, but you never know. He said the bike is better than the 2008 version.”
