MotoGP Coronavirus Covid-19 – The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports regretfully announce the cancellation of the British and Australian Grands Prix. The current coronavirus epidemic and resulting calendar changes have forced the cancellation of both events.

The British Grand Prix was due to take place from 28 to 30 August at the classic Silverstone circuit, which hosted the first Grand Prix on British soil since 1977 and where MotoGP returned ten years ago. For the first time in history there will be no MotoGP race in Great Britain, in over 70 years of the championship.

The cancellation of the British Grand Prix also entails the cancellation of the corresponding British Talent Cup on-track activity.

The Australian Grand Prix was scheduled to take place at the legendary Phillip Island circuit from 23 to 25 October. Phillip Island hosted the first Australian motorcycle Grand Prix in 1989 and since 1997 has been the only home of MotoGP with its unique layout guaranteeing great battles.

Statements Stuart Pringle, CEO of Silverstone cancellation of British GP

“We are extremely disappointed by the cancellation of the British MotoGP event, also because the canceled race in 2018 is still a recent memory, but we support the decision that has been made in this exceptional case. I want to thank the stoic British fans for their patience and support. We now look forward to 2021 when Silverstone will once again host MotoGP at a more fast and historic track and we will work hard to make it a truly exceptional event for everyone.”

Statements by Little AO, President of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation cancellation of Australian GP

“We are very disappointed that MotoGP fans in Victoria, Australia and internationally will not have the chance to see the best riders in the world compete on one of the best circuits in the world, but the right decision has been made. We will be back to our best in 2021.”

Statements by Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta cancellation of the British and Australian GPs

“We are saddened to have to announce the cancellation of these iconic events after finding ways to overcome the logistical and operational challenges resulting from a pandemic-related and rearranged calendar. Silverstone and Phillip Island have always been two of the most exciting race weekends of the season, with both tracks never failing to deliver hotly contested racing.
On behalf of Dorna, I would like to once again thank the fans for their understanding and patience as we wait for the situation to improve. We can't wait to return to Silverstone and Phillip Island next year for more incredible battles.”
