Moto2 – Sachsenring Race – Elias wins ahead of Iannone and Rolfo
Toni Elias returns to victory in Moto2 after four races with results below expectations. The former MotoGP rider, now in Moto2 with the Gresini team, brought his Moriwaki to the third success of the season, extending himself in the championship standings due to the crashes of Thomas Luthi and Julian Simon in the first laps of the race.
Elias managed to recover early, getting close to Andrea Iannone, who was fleeing with the Speed Up, managing to overtake with six laps to go. With this result the Spanish rider now has 42 points on Thomas Luthi and 46 on Andrea Iannone, Simon and Tomizawa only losing ground in 18th.
On the podium in addition to Andrea Iannone there is another Italian rider, Roberto Rolfo, third with the new Suter of the Italtrans team: the Turin native had not been on the podium in the MotoGP for 6 years, having raced in Superbike and in the CEV in recent seasons.
The other Italians are behind: Alex Baldolini is 11th, Niccolò Canepa is 20th ahead of Claudio Corti, 22nd. Raffaele De Rosa fell, as did Simone Corsi who was dueling with Toni Elias and lost contact in the standings.
