Moto2 Jerez, Qualifying: Esteve Rabat takes pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix
The Spaniard beat Scott Redding and Takaaki Nakagami, the Italians behind
The pole position of the Moto2 class Spanish Grand Prix (third stage of the 2013 world championship) went to Esteve Rabat. The Team Pons rider (at his first pole in the Moto2 class) achieved it with a time of 1:43.251, a time that allowed him to precede Scott Redding, rider of the Marc VDS Racing Team, by a good 447 thousandths. Rabat, who had also been the fastest in the morning session, drove very effectively, while his team-mate Pol Espargarò was unable to go beyond the fourth fastest time, also preceded by the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami, who closes the front row.
Aleix's brother (Espargarò, who races with a CRT in MotoGP) will therefore open the second row where he will be joined by his compatriots Jordi Torres (Suter of Team Aspar) and Xavier Simeon (Kalex of Team Desguaces La Torre Maptaq).
Nico Terol, Torres' teammate, was seventh and finished ahead of the German Marcel Schrotter (riding the Kalex of Team Desguaces La Torre SAG) and Thomas Luthi, rider of the Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing Team.
The best of the Italian drivers is the Roman Simone Corsi, eleventh with the Speed Up of Team NGM Mobile. Further back were Mattia Pasini and Alex de Angelis, who finished in twentieth and twenty-second position respectively, more than a second and six from the top. The 2012 Moto3 champion Sandro Cortese instead finished qualifying in nineteenth position.
