Mika Kallio dominated the Moto2 class Spanish Grand Prix, going on to win his first race of the year on the Jerez de la Frontera circuit. The Finn had achieved pole yesterday and this morning he was the fastest in the warm up. With him on the podium were the Swiss Dominique Aegerter and the German Jonas Folger.

A race to forget for the Italian colours, with Corsi having a double fall and the others finishing behind. World championship leader Esteve Rabat came fourth and therefore saw his lead over team-mate Mika Kallio shortened, which now stands at 16 points.

Race report

The Moto2 class riders are ready to compete in the Spanish Grand Prix, the fourth stage of the 2014 world championship, which will take place on the Jerez de la Frontera track. Pole position for Mika Kallio, rider of the Marc VDS Racing Team. The Finn will share the front row with the German Sandro Cortese (Kalex) and Luis Salom, a rider who competed for the Moto3 class world championship last year until the last race in Valencia.

Second row for the Swiss Thomas Luthi and Dominique Aegerter (both on Suter) and for the world championship leader Esteve Rabat (Kalex). The German Jonas Folger, the Spaniard Maverick Vinales and the German Marcel Schrotter will form the third row.

The best of the Italian riders is Simone Corsi, eleventh with the Forward KLX. The Roman is therefore on the fourth row, while his team-mate Mattia Pasini will start from the sixth. Seventh row for Alex de Angelis and Lorenzo Baldassarri (both run on Suter chassis), while Franco Morbidelli (Kalex) will start from eighth. All ready, 26 laps to go for 114.998 km. The traffic lights go out, the fastest at the start is poleman Mika Kallio, who started ahead of Aegerter, Luthi, Folger, Cortese, Salom and our Simone Corsi. The others are further back, with Alex de Angelis 20th, Pasini 21st and Morbidelli 22nd.

Hard-fought first laps, with the riders exchanging positions several times, but with Kallio always firmly in the lead. Behind him there is a battle between Aegerter, Folger, Salom, Rabat and Corsi. The Roman driver of Forward Racing is the only driver who is holding high Italian colours, given that the others, as previously mentioned, are far behind. Meanwhile, Lorenzo Baldassarri's race ends, racing with the Suter of Team Gresini.

The 2013 Supersport champion Sam Lowes also fell, but he got back on the bike and restarted the race, however compromised. We have now reached the halfway point of the race, Kallio is still in the lead, but the Swiss Dominique Aegerter does not give up and comes really close to the Finn of the Marc VDS Racing Team. Folger, the German AGR Team rider, is also trying to close the gap, while world championship leader Esteve Rabat is fourth, but almost six seconds behind.

Let's summarize the positions of our team: Simone Corsi (Forward KLX) is eighth, Mattia Pasini (Forward KLX) fourteenth, Alex de Angelis (Suter) twenty-first and Franco Morbidelli (Kalex) twenty-second.

Simone Corsi, the Forward Racing rider, falls and lost the front of his bike, ending up in the gravel. The Roman starts again helped by the commissioners, but his race is now compromised. Incredible but true, Sam Lowes falls again, having returned to the track after the first crash and was recovering. This time, however, he sadly returns to the pits and ends his Spanish GP with a "zero".

Final laps of the race, Simone Corsi falls again, imitated shortly afterwards by the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami. A race truly to forget for the Roman rider. Kallio instead went on to win his first race of the year. His last success dates back to the 2013 Czech Republic Grand Prix. His total victories in the world championship thus rises to 14. Dominique Aegerter and Jonas Folger also climb onto the podium. The best of our team in the end is Alex de Angelis, seventeenth and who finishes ahead of Mattia Pasini, eighteenth.
