Hector Barbera achieved the best time in the first free practice session of the 1 class at Phillip Island in 34.338'250, only to then crash after a bad highside during his personal 17th lap. The Spanish rider hit his back violently on the asphalt, never managing to resume testing on his Pepe World Team Aprilia.

However, Barbera was not approached by anyone at the top of the standings, even if behind him there are several surprise riders in prominent positions: second is Raffaele De Rosa (Scot – Honda) who precedes Jules Cluzel (Matteoni – Aprilia) and Mike Di Meglio, on the podium in Estoril.

Good fifth time for the other Honda of Hector Faubel who precedes Mattia Pasini on his debut with the Paddock GP Racing team, while the other riders fighting for the championship are behind: tenth Marco Simoncelli, eleventh Hiroshi Aoyama and immediately behind them Alvaro Bautista. The other Italians are behind, with Baldolini 16th and Locatelli 17th.
