The first free practice session of the Motegi Grand Prix reserved for the 125cc saw the best time of Andrea Iannone, capable of setting a time of 2'00"685 on the Ongetta Team ISPA Aprilia. The winner of the Losail race preceded, as in Qatar, Julian Simon, second at 179 thousandths, and Stefan Bradl, third on the Viessmann Kiefer Racing Aprilia after winning at Motegi last year.

Fourth time instead for Esteve Rabat who precedes his compatriot Nicolas Terol and Dominique Aegerter, followed by Bradley Smith, Pol Espargaro, Sandro Cortese and Marc Marquez in tenth place. Simone Corsi did badly, only 17th and preceded by Lorenzo Zanetti (15th), while Lorenzo Savadori (24th) was the protagonist of a crash.

Also noteworthy is the fall of Cameron Beaubier, the second KTM rider who ranked only 23rd in the time rankings.
