Nico Terol on the Jack&Jones Team Aprilia recorded the best time in the first free practice session of the Indianapolis Grand Prix. The Spanish driver stopped the clock at 1'50.603 just before the rain arrived on the Indianapolis circuit, ahead of his former teammate Simone Corsi (now with the Fontana Racing team), Bradley Smith and Sandro Cortese in the standings.

Fifth time for Marc Marquez with the first of two KTMs lined up, followed by Efren Vazquez (Derbi), Stefan Bradl, Sergio Gadea and only ninth Julian Simon, championship leader with a large margin over his pursuers.

The Italians, apart from Corsi, are behind: Andrea Iannone eleventh, Lorenzo Zanetti twenty-first, at the bottom of the ranking are the debutants on this track Savadori (25th), Marconi (26th) and Vitali (31st).
