Julian Simon was unable to celebrate his championship victory with three races to spare in Estoril due to an error a few laps from the end. The Spanish rider from the Bancaja Aspar team crashed when he was firmly in the lead, with a good advantage over his pursuers, which did not include Nico Terol, who crashed in the first part of the race with Bradley Smith. Thanks to Simon's mistake, restarting and only 12th at the finish line, the 2009 world championship has yet to decide its champion.

The winner of the day was Pol Espargaro, who managed to make up for the missed victory in Misano Adriatico. In his second success of the season, the Derbi driver preceded Sandro Cortese and Bradley Smith at the finish line, for whom third position was enough to keep the championship open.

However, the expected Italian protagonists were out of the game: Andrea Iannone immediately on the third lap, Simone Corsi a little later when he was fighting with Simon. Stefan Bradl finished in front, fourth, followed by Joan Olive, Sergio Gadea and Esteve Rabat. Lorenzo Zanetti is in points, 13th, while Luca Vitali is 22nd.
