Superbikes | Qatar Round, FP2: Chaz Davies finishes ahead of everyone
The Welshman precedes the reigning World Champion and his Ducati teammate by around three tenths
The second free practice session of the Motul Qatar Round revealed significant indications in terms of race pace: at the top of the standings is Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) ahead of Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and Alvaro Bautista, in the last appointment astride the Ducati.
Chaz Davies won twice at Losail and seems to have everything it takes to repeat it again this weekend: the Welshman jumped into the lead with just five minutes to go.
Jonathan Rea retained second position by working hard on his race pace, and it was a very positive session for Alvaro Bautista too.
Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Puccetti Racing) wants to end his season with third place in the general classification and finished fourth.
Among the top ten there are many Independent riders with Sandro Cortese (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) ninth and Loris Baz (Ten Kate Racing – Yamaha) tenth.
The Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team duo of Alex Lowes and Michael van der Mark are very close: the Dutchman is fifth, Lowes is seventh and both are competing for third place in the world together with Toprak Razgatlioglu and will have to work together to bring Yamaha to finish on the podium at the end of the season.
BMW's fight in Qatar sees 2013 WorldSBK Champion Tom Sykes leading the way, spending much of the session in 15th place before recording a great lap that took him up to sixth with less than eight minutes to go. Teammate Markus Reiterberger (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) is eighth and so far does not have a bike for the 2020 season but once again he showed everyone what he is capable of.
Outside the top ten in the last weekend of his WorldSBK career is Marco Melandri (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) currently 14th, while the best Honda is that of Leon Camier (Moriwaki Althea Honda Team) in 17th position at last Round with the Japanese manufacturer before moving to the BARNI Ducati team in 2020.
