Superbike Portimao: Tom Sykes leads the first free practices ahead of Fabrizio and Rea
The British rider puts his Kawasaki ZX-10R ahead of Aprilia and Honda
The Portuguese stage of the Superbike World Championship in Portimao begins under the banner of Tom Sykes. The Kawasaki rider in fact achieved the best time in the first free practice session on the track hosting the sixth round of the 2013 World SBK Championship.
The British rider from Kawasaki, who lapped in 1'44.241, preceded the Roman Michel Fabrizio by just 87 thousandths, riding the Aprilia RSV4. The Team Red Devils Roma rider in turn preceded the Honda of the British Jonathan Rea, 212 thousandths off the top.
The BMWs of Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri from Ravenna also performed well, in fourth and fifth position and immediately ahead of the official Aprilias of Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty. The two bikes from the Noale company are followed by the Kawasaki of Frenchman Loris Baz, by our Davide Giugliano (on the Aprilia RSV4 of Team Althea) and the Suzuki of Team Fixi Crescent of Leon Camier who closes the Top Ten.
The first Ducati is that of Carlos Checa, eleventh and 781 thousandths behind Sykes. The Spaniard put himself behind the Honda of the returning Leon Haslam and team-mate Ayrton Badovini. It should be noted that the first twelve riders are within the space of just over a second, therefore very small gaps in this first contact with Portimao.
