Carlos Checa has started the weekend in the best possible way which could see him become the 2011 Superbike World Champion. At Magny-Cours the Spaniard achieved the best time in the first free practice session on Friday.

A 13th place in France was enough for Checa to win the title but he immediately set the best time, lapping in 1.39.013, more than a tenth ahead of Tom Sykes, the best of the Kawasakis.

Followed by the two BMWs of Troy Corser and Leon Haslam, who looked capable of scoring a one-two after a series of fast laps. In the final, however, Checa and Sykes managed to overtake them.

Jakub Smrz is fifth on the Effenbert-Liberty Ducati, while Eugene Laverty, Norihyuki Haga, Joan Lascorz and Sylvain Guintoli complete the top 10.

Jonathan Rea, winner at Imola, is only 11th while Leon Camier is 13th. Marco Melandri, the only one capable of denying Checa the title, is 15th.

Only 19 drivers competing this weekend. Ruben Xaus failed to set a time after a crash on his first flying lap causing the red flag to be shown.
