South Africa should have the Superbike World Championship again. In fact, the race on 19 October 2014 which will be held on the Phakisa Freeway circuit, located in the Free State area, has been confirmed (even if the contract has yet to be definitively closed).

“We have signed a pre-agreement with Dorna, the promoter company of the Superbike World Championship, and the contract will be closed on the basis of certain conditions – he said Anthony Lauter of GAS Sports, Event Organiser – We still have to secure the necessary financial coverage requested by Dorna and, furthermore, the Phakisa Freeway will have to pass the FIM inspection. We are confident that we will be able to meet all the requirements. A number of leading South African riders will be at the start of the round, which will also include World Supersport.”

“MSA is pleased to hear the news of a possible return of South Africa to the FIM Superbike World Championship and congratulates promoter GAS Sports on the work done so far – he added Adrian Scholtz, CEO, Operations, Motorsport South Africa – A few years have passed since the last appearance of the competition on South African soil and I am sure that this event will be good for national motorsport.”

“We are happy to return to South Africa and to the Phakisa Freeway, where we have worked very well in the past – he finally said Javier Alonso, WSBK Executive Director – We are therefore confident that it will be a successful event, especially in light of the great passion for motorcycling present in South Africa. We are planning a visit to the Circuit in the next few days, together with representatives of the FIM, to carry forward the homologation process, contractual issues and event preparation procedures.”
