Superbike Donington: Smrz fastest in first qualifying
Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert) was the fastest in the first qualifying of the fifth round (out of 14) of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship. The driver from the Czech Republic lapped in 1'29”336, just four tenths from the 2011 race record set by Carlos Checa.
At Donington Smrz was the protagonist last season, leading race one for a long time and then finishing in second place in the wake of Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad). Second best time for the Northern Irishman Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) who arrived just 58 thousandths from the top despite two harmless crashes: one in the morning, the other at the end of qualifying. The provisional front row of the grid that will be defined tomorrow by the Tissot-Superpole also includes Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) and Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad).
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) doesn't reveal his cards: the winner of Monza currently has the sixth fastest time. The best of the Italians was Michel Fabrizio (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet), seventh ahead of Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) and the emerging Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Ducati). Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet), who slipped in the early stages like Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Racing), is tenth, two positions ahead of Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad).
After the difficult weekend in Monza, the Superbike returned to offer a fantastic show with twelve riders within less than a second and the first nineteen in 1"8.
