The Sachsenring circuit became part of the world championship calendar in 1961 and has always attracted large crowds of spectators. At the beginning it was a very fast and equally dangerous road circuit, so much so that since 1972 it has no longer hosted a GP. Completely renovated, it returned to the calendar in 1998, as the slowest track ever at the time with an average lap speed of 143 km/h. With the changes introduced in 2000 and 2001 the average speed rose to the current 159 km/h. In any case, the track, which runs anti-clockwise, remains narrow and tortuous and requires good engine performance especially at medium speeds.
