After the pole position, Casey Stoner also set the best time in the warm up on his home circuit at Phillip Island in 1'30.942, an unapproachable time for his pursuers. The Australian from Ducati, in completely dry track conditions, trailed Marco Simoncelli by 1"8, first of his pursuers, with Valentino Rossi third at 1"9 in recovery despite the gap suffered by the 2007 world champion.

There is no Jorge Lorenzo in the top positions, even 15th (last) having only covered a few laps to avoid taking unnecessary risks in anticipation of the race, simply trying to gain confidence with these not yet ideal track conditions.

In the standings, however, Andrea Dovizioso is in fourth place, ahead of Colin Edwards, Randy De Puniet and Marco Melandri, the protagonist of an off-track excursion in the final minutes when he was very fast with his Honda Gresini.

Ben Spies, on the front row of the starting grid, crashed instead, preceded by Alvaro Bautista with the only Suzuki on the track: Loris Capirossi has officially given up competing in the Australian GP due to yesterday's crash in qualifying.
