MotoGP Paolo Ciabatti – Just over twenty days before the start of the first pre-season tests in Sepang, the very first pieces on the market chessboard are starting to move, a topic that will accompany us throughout 2018.

What appears to be a first move was made today by Paolo Ciabatti, sporting director of Ducati Corse who, in an interview given to Corriere dello Sport, veiledly declared that, in the Borgo Panigale team's garage, there is no space for two “golden” salaries. The DS's words can be read in various forms but, from any point of view, it is clear that they will not be willing to spend "too much" on the riders and that one of the two, between Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso, will have to make some "sacrifices". ”.

On one side of the garage there is the Spaniard, who with a salary of 12 million euros takes a good part of the available budget, while on the other the Forlivese who, having arrived to fight for the world championship until the last race, certainly deserves a better contract. Will this cause tension within the team? Or will it be a stimulus for both of us to always give our best?

“Obviously we would like to confirm both, but budgets are not infinite and we cannot spend it all in one direction, excluding margins for development.” He said Paolo ciabatti, who then added: “Obviously we are aware that Dovizioso expects an offer in line with his latest results. Achieved, it must be admitted, thanks to his great personal growth and an exceptional state of form, but also thanks to the support and competitiveness of his Ducati. Six Grands Prix are not won by chance. There were races, Brno, Aragon, Phillip Island, where we struggled more and in fact the objective is precisely to improve where we were weak, in order to allow the riders to bring home as many points as possible even in situations of difficulty. We will start talking to Andrea soon. He expects a salary in line with that of the other top riders, we will discuss economic but also technical guarantees. He's right, it will be a complicated negotiation. We will start talking after the Sepang tests at the end of the month."

Over the course of the winter, news also spread that the Bolognese company was working simultaneously on two different chassis for the Desmosedici GP18 to try to follow the indications of both riders.

“There won't be two chassis, it's true that Jorge has greater difficulty in obtaining a good speed when entering and cornering once he releases the brakes, but this is also a problem for Andrea who is more aggressive in this phase. Every improvement will benefit both of us, and the new frame will have enough adjustability to allow this. The GP18 will not copy the Honda, and it has not been overturned but simply evolved. After all, in 2017 we won six Grands Prix and we fought for the world championship until the end".

Another issue still to be resolved concerns the technical regulations, in particular the aerodynamic appendages. In Ducati, the latest version shown by Yamaha during the Valencia tests did not "go down", much more similar to those seen during the 2016 season with only a side bulkhead to close them, rather than the versions brought to the track by the Red team before and then from Aprilia.

"We anxiously await clarification on the aerodynamics, because if Yamaha presents itself with that view in Valencia we will have to re-study ours to obtain a narrower fairing."

Ducati hasn't won the riders' world championship for years, but the cogl1on1 one, when negotiations with riders are involved, has been won by them for years now, they played for the number one in the world years ago in exchange for a donkey, now they pay gold another donkey and for Andrea there is no money....

    1. whose said:

the number one you mention left slamming the door, and it wasn't just for money that he slammed it, while the donkey with 9 titles had him mounted on a gate...

I would add gate made such by a certain number one who adapts to the motorbike but does not develop a blissful cock@.

They will adjust Lorenzo's salary based on results, as also happens in F1 for some drivers.
Certainly Dovi strikes the iron now that it's nice and hot and doing well, the discrepancy between the two salaries is absurd given the results, but one is a world champion and Andrea is not, the contract was also and above all based on that.
Dovi will be forced to confirm himself as faster than the Spaniard, who on the other hand will have no more excuses, a big mess for Ciabatti etc!

I don't think they can lower Lorenzo's contract who, if I'm not mistaken, had signed for two seasons at that amount, I agree that Dovizioso doesn't have a CV like Lorenzo, the Ducati leaders didn't expect this season and probably neither did Dovizioso who now and I add rightly wants the money he deserves...nice mess

Cujo, Stoner had left solely for a matter of principle, and he was right! The top management went around the paddock with a mega offer and instead there was no money for him, according to them! regarding the gate, go and see the results of that gate with Stoner, not only in 2007 but also the subsequent ones and even in the tests before passing into the hands of the reds, if you don't agree, report the championship scores here then we'll discuss it... strange that you don't start saying that Yamaha is a gate...

I'm not here to defend anyone but you should take 2 things into consideration, the first is that after years of Yamaha he had to get used to Ducati anyway, and secondly just look at Hayden's results, in Ducati both Stoner's last year and Valentino's first , in 2010 Niky with 163 points with 3 retirements and constantly placed in the wooden medal, the following year 132 points with one less retirement... there is no doubt that Stoner knew how to ride that bike, just as there is no doubt that the evolution of the Ducati was further behind its competitors when Valentino arrived.

but for Preziosi and all the Ducatisti the bike was perfect…..

Things that I have already said a thousand times but they are convinced that after a 2007 with 10 victories and zero falls, a 2008 with 6 victories, a 2009 with 4 victories, a 2010 with 3 victories and 23 falls, in 2011 Stoner would have won the world championship .

      3. TONYKART said:

but come on Nando you really say that you claim a world championship only with placings......

In 2010 Stoner finished behind Rossi with a leg and shoulder injury and with 4 races not contested, while Stoner won three races, but all or nothing doesn't always pay off.

      5. nandop6 said:

        In fact, it hardly pays.

sure, we all remember him going around with his 24 hour bag full of money, but come on, the problem was something else….
anyway 2007 honor to Stoner, won big, 2008, almost 100 points from Rossi... 2009, same as 2008... 2010, Rossi broken and out for 4 races and finished third, Stoner fourth at 150 points from Lorenzo, with 3 races less.

in your opinion, from 2008 to 2010 did Ducati take pay for the rider's demerits??

why do we have to say that Yamaha is a gate??

    1. whose said:

sorry, Stoner had 3 fewer races in 2010

        2009… .

While I was away they offered Jorge Lorenzo a contract for double the money. They told me when we signed for 2009 and 2010 that they had no more money, either for me or for development and suddenly they could afford to shell out that much for another driver? Considering what we had accomplished together, I could hardly believe it.

this is the reason, I seem to have heard the words money and development recently, even with Dovizioso....years go by but the excuses are still the same

these are the words of stoner: While I was away they offered Jorge Lorenzo a contract for double the money. Considering what we had achieved together, I could hardly believe it....I add, it couldn't be more infamous than that, exactly what they are doing now at Dovi!
regarding the stoner "gate" after the 2007 world championship
he came second in 2008 with 6 victories, fourth in 2009 with 3 victories and fourth again in 2010 with 3 victories, now considering that these results were also obtained in a period of physical problems and injuries for stoners, it doesn't seem to me that he has left reds a gate as you say, if these are gate results…..then this year's yamaha what is it? and the honda which wins only thanks to marquez's miracles is not a gate??? the reality that you bullied ducati just because it was a small Italian company, now that shit isn't working on Yamaha, it's magically no one's fault, these shitty results are a mystery...

However, the contract expires at the end of 2018 so the salary for the next one will be made based on this season's results. In my opinion, if they were to be on the same level they should halve Lorenzo's and give it to Dovizioso given that he was responsible for developing the bike up until this year.

Andrea Dovizioso amazed by having won with a motorcycle considered "impossible" like the Ducati Desmosedici. He didn't do it just once, but six times, giving a season of dreams and hopes to Italian fans and men of the Red team. But in the cynical world of business, sponsors and racing this is not enough to reward a humble and reserved driver like the man from Forlì.

Paolo Ciabatti has made it known that it will be difficult to reach an agreement with Dovi on the contract extension (here is the statement). The 12,5 million euros per season paid into Jorge Lorenzo's account weigh on Borgo Panigale's balance sheet and which, despite the absence of victories, will be reduced slightly. The law of the market dictates betting on a five-time world champion and it doesn't matter if the feeling with the bike is still slow in arriving.

Moreover, Andrea Dovizioso had already anticipated the difficulties of finding an agreement on the renewal of the contract. The first alarm bell had already rang at the beginning of October: “Starting next year we will have to sit down and discuss – stated the pilot from Forlì -. We have to see what conditions I will find. The negotiations with Ducati will be different compared to last year." Shortly thereafter Maurizio Bruscolini, during a television programme, had anticipated the possibility that Dovi would end up in the ranks of Yamaha (official or satellite...), much to everyone's bewilderment and uproar. (This is where the indiscretion came from). After Christmas, Andrea once again underlines the difficulties of the negotiations: "My relationship with Ducati has been very complicated because I don't compromise too much", he declared in an interview with 'Il Giornale'. At the end of 2016 he had to accept having his salary halved and having to share the garage with the newcomer Jorge Lorenzo paid a lot of money.

An “economic” compromise. But also of internal relationships. “I didn't like the way the whole issue was presented to me at all.” Words that hide a certain well-hidden malaise for an entire championship, both from the results and from Dovi's mild character. But now the contract is expiring: “We are already negotiating – he admitted before the end of the new year -. It will be very difficult to agree. What is decided now will immediately affect 2018... Let's see." Lorenzo's behavior in Valencia also weighed on the mood, even though he was immediately buried under the carpet at home... “But in the end what would have changed if I had pushed the issue to make Jorge come out even worse? The important thing is that Ducati knows how things went and that this situation pays off at the right time." But when it comes to paying, Borgo Panigale's top management prefers to look in a foreign direction...
