MotoGP Motegi: Pole goes to Lorenzo who beats Rossi with a record lap

The spectacle offered by Lorenzo and Rossi in qualifying for the Japanese GP was great

MotoGP Motegi: Pole goes to Lorenzo who beats Rossi with a record lapMotoGP Motegi: Pole goes to Lorenzo who beats Rossi with a record lap

MotoGP 2015 Motegi Qualifying – The Rossi VS Lorenzo duel had its epilogue in the Motegi qualifying sessions right under the checkered flag, when the Majorcan beat the Pesaro driver by just 81 thousandths, with a record lap, 1:43.790.

The surprise, however, is not seeing Lorenzo on pole (the 4th of the season, the 34th in MotoGP), but a Valentino Rossi reborn after trying a new setting in FP4. The seven-time Top Class world champion had pole in the GP for a few seconds, but what matters is being on the front row and very close to his team-mate, who, we remind you, has 14 points to recover from him in the world championship standings.

A long-distance duel but which tomorrow could be experienced in a melee between the two Yamaha riders, who at the moment seem unbeatable. The weather could ruin the show, given that rain is forecast.

The reigning champion Marc Marquez (Honda) will start with them on the front row, but at the moment he doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the M1s. The operated hand doesn't seem to be the biggest problem, while the setup of the RC213V seems to worry #93.

Excellent performance for Ducati, which places Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone on the second row. The Forlì native is fourth, 0.532s from the top, while the rider from Vasto has a gap of 0.646s from the top. Dani Pedrosa will start with them, setting the sixth fastest time on the #26 Honda.

Third row for Aleix Espargarò's Suzuki, Cal Crutchlow's Honda and Bradley Smith's Yamaha. Maverick Vinales, Pol Espargaro and Scott Redding will start from fourth.

It seems that there will be no shortage of fairings tomorrow……..
Nice to see Lorenzo's face when he got off the motorbike... Who knows what he was thinking :))

Hahaha…so true! Lorenzo had a face that said: “What the fuck is Rossi doing 81 thousandths from my pole?? I should have been at least 4 tenths ahead of him and instead I stuck him to my butt!”

Anyway, great Lorenzo who did a perfect lap, but WHAT A SPECTACULAR to see a Rossi battling on equal terms with him even in qualifying!!! Too much pleasure! I think Lorenzo won't be able to sleep peacefully tonight :) I said I preferred a race with unstable weather... bullshit! Now I would really like for the sun to come out tomorrow at Motegi so that I can enjoy in all its magnificence the duel between the two "amigos" of the Yamaha Factory which, according to the premises, promises to be to the death!

Ps: Alex De Angelis' flight in FP4 was terrifying! Let's hope he didn't suffer anything serious.

I agree, Lorenzo is at the top this year as he has never been, both physically and technically with the bike. I have always been convinced that Rossi's non-competitiveness in qualifying is a psychological issue, he doesn't risk a crash, he once managed to overcome this in the race, the bikes and the riders have changed and today it is no longer possible to recover, or almost, for which the famous rabbit with the top hat never existed, today he brought out his attributes and the result arrived without which the world championship cannot be won.

Right analysis. Rossi was never a thunderbolt in qualifying when he was young, let alone now at 36 and with this system that he doesn't like at all. When he was in his prime, he didn't care too much about getting pole because he had so much more in the race. Now, however, in qualifying he doesn't feel like risking too much and this often jeopardizes his race too, because starting from the second or third row is never a good thing, especially now that he no longer has as much margin for recovery as he once did. . But as you rightly said, today he was forced to bring out the pelotas and the result arrived... as well as the message to Giorgino!

before qualifying I was doubtful but now I think the roles have almost been reversed. Rossi can worry Lorenzo, although in my opinion Lorenzo is still the favourite. The fact is that in the dry Rossi can still compete with Lorenzo, but if it rains Rossi is more favored than Lorenzo. In both cases Rossi is competitive, Lorenzo is no longer sure of winning even in the dry. Let's hope it's dry because the last wet race in Misano was a mess. I'd rather be dry with Rossi who does in my opinion if they beat him than a race like the one in Misano. Wake up at 6.45am tomorrow :D

The impression was actually that of a Lorenzo who was less than happy despite the Pole, and Rossi more euphoric and perhaps a little regretful for not having achieved it.

But I'm not convinced by Rossi being so confident even in the dry, saying that he had found a good setting at the end of FP4 to go fast on used tires like Jorge had done.

If the race is completely dry, it seems to me that Jorge was faster in the first laps with new tires and could drop to 1'44.5-8 while Rossi was more on 1.45.1. We'll see in the race if there will be perfect dry conditions.

They will both have to start well, but I'm not sure that Rossi is at the same level as Jorge for now in terms of pace, and there is still the Warm Up even if it promises to be wet.

It will be interesting to see how they combine with a wet track already in the warm up.

However, I would go there with caution, every race in the wet is a different matter. It's not because Rossi won at Silverstone and Lorenzo was knocked out at Misano, among other things in the dry that here too Rossi starts as the favorite if he is wet. Lorenzo can make mistakes like Rossi, they can both fall or be touched, or have problems changing bikes between wet-dry or dry-wet.

Rossi and Lorenzo certainly know what they can do and perhaps Lorenzo is more worried about a physical question about holding on for an entire race with Rossi closer than expected. Furthermore, Lorenzo specified that the minimal change in humidity and temperature in Q2 changed his feeling with the tires quite a bit.

We'll see what happens in the race and what the conditions will be, maybe only Lorenzo's head can change things, but it seems strange to me that he was in such a bad mood just because Rossi was closer than expected and was forced to do a great lap to beat him .

Rossi seems confident...but he's definitely wrong!! Surely, being there on the motorbike, racing with Lorenzo, he has no idea of Lorenzo's pace. Only you know..If it were me I would put you in Galbusera's place..the 46 would really need a competent person like you

“Rossi and Lorenzo certainly know what they can do”

      Learn to read…

Lorenzo was angry for nothing and in this Rossi won the psychological battle of at least this qualifying.

I remain perplexed by the fact that Rossi can start as strong as Lorenzo and be as effective in the first laps if they both don't make any mistakes, whether you like it or not is my opinion.

Maybe it won't even be dry, or worse they will have to start on slicks with the track still damp. But in dry conditions I see a faster Lorenzo for the first half of the race, this doesn't mean that Rossi couldn't attack him and get pulled, given that we saw that in T4 for example when he had Pedrosa in front he was very fast. On British Sport they also talked about consumption as a critical phase if it will be a dry race, so Rossi should opt for a race to save money in the slipstream rather than start pulling.
