MotoGP 2015 GP San Marino and Riviera di Rimini – The weather had its hand in the Grand Prix of San Marino and Riviera di Rimini, the scene of the thirteenth stage of the 2015 world championship. The rain that initially fell then stopped falling, but subsequently returned in abundance, forcing the riders to flag-to-flag race. Lorenzo, Rossi and Marquez returned together for the first time to take the bikes equipped with rain tyres, but when later the rain stopped falling, it was Marquez (with ten laps to go), then third, who made the right decision , returning two laps before Lorenzo and three before Rossi to get the bike back on slicks.

The Honda champion thus went on to win, while Lorenzo, having just returned to the track, was the victim of a bad fall, with a suspected fracture of his right hand. A heavy "zero" in terms of the world championship, which brings him -23 behind Valentino Rossi, fifth at the finish line. Unprecedented podium with Bradley Smith second and Scott Redding third; Danilo Petrucci's race was positive, sixth at the finish line. The world ranking now sees Rossi in the lead with 247 points against Lorenzo's 224, Marc Marquez's 184 and Andrea Iannone's 159.

Fifth position interrupts a very long series of consecutive podiums for Valentino Rossi, which, however, as mentioned, still allows him to extend his lead in the championship, an advantage that could be decisive with a view to tenth in the world championship.

Race report

The great wait is about to end, the riders of the MotoGP class are ready to compete in the San Marino and Riviera di Rimini Grand Prix, the thirteenth of the eighteen stages, scheduled at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The pole position, the third of the season, was won by four-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo, who set a best time of 15'1 in the 32.146-minute “Time Attack”, a new track record. The reigning champion Marc Marquez and our Valentino Rossi will start on the front row with him, leader of the world championship with a 12 point advantage over Lorenzo.

Second row for Dani Pedrosa (Honda), for Michele Pirro (Tester Ducati) and for the Yamaha of the British Bradley Smith. Third row all "Red", with Andrea Iannone, Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci; the first two are riding the GP15s, while the Pramac Racing rider from Terni has the GP14.2 at his disposal. Eighth and ninth row for Claudio Corti with the Forward Racing Yamaha Open and for the San Marino Alex de Angelis, riding the Iodaracing ART. Everything is ready, a few drops of rain fall, twenty-eight laps to go for 118.328 km. The traffic lights go out, the fastest at the start is Jorge Lorenzo, who started ahead of Marquez, Rossi, Pedrosa and Iannone. Michele Pirro started from the pits due to a problem with his motorbike.

The first lap ends with Lorenzo ahead of Marquez, Rossi, Pedrosa, Iannone, Smith and Dovizioso. The sky is increasingly threatening and already on the second lap, drops of rain begin to fall. Lorenzo continues to lead the race ahead of Marquez and Rossi, while Iannone threatens Pedrosa. Fast lap for the Pesaro driver, while Michele Pirro returns to the pits. The rain becomes more and more insistent and it's a great fight between Iannone, Pedrosa, Smith, Redding and Dovizioso. All except the first three return to the pits, the asphalt situation is truly at its limits. Scott Redding paid the consequences after slipping and getting back on his bike. Lorenzo, Marquez and Rossi also return, changing bikes by getting on those equipped with rain tyres.

Upon returning to the track Lorenzo maintains his position on Marquez, but after a few corners the reigning Honda champion attacks the Majorcan, taking the lead of the race. However, the #93 of the Repsol Honda Team goes wide at the Quercia, giving first place back to the Yamaha rider.

Meanwhile, Alex de Angelis and Yonny Hernandez were out of the race, with the latter mowing down the innocent San Marino player from Iodaracing. Meanwhile, Valentino Rossi has closed the entire gap on the first two up front, while Danilo Petrucci's race was excellent, finishing fourth on the Ducati GP14.2 of Team Pramac.

Meanwhile, the weather continues to change, the line is drying up and Claudio Corti and Loris Baz return to the pits to get the bike back on slick tyres. Meanwhile Rossi passes Marquez up front and threatens Lorenzo up close.

We have now reached the halfway point of the race, the top ten are Lorenzo, Rossi, Marquez, Petrucci, Pedrosa, Pol Espargarò, Iannone, Dovizioso, Crutchlow and Barberà. Also in the pits to change bikes again were Miller and Redding. It will be important to check the times of the latter two to understand if the time has come to put the slicks back on. Rossi attacks, who passes Lorenzo when braking after the finish line, with twelve laps remaining. The Pesaro rider immediately tries to push forward, but from the pits they signal Lorenzo to come back. In fact, the performance of the slicks is currently around 10 seconds per lap better than the rains. Rossi and Lorenzo don't stop, while Marc Marquez does, a crucial moment of the race.

Lorenzo stops, while Rossi continues, stopping on the next lap. Plot twist! Fall for Jorge Lorenzo, very bad flight for the Majorcan, who fortunately gets up even if limping. A very hard blow for the two-time MotoGP champion, who sees the world championship further away. Two races, that of Silverstone and this one of Misano, were characterized by the weather, which dealt a great "blow" to the #99 Yamaha.

With five laps to go Marquez leads the race ahead of Smith, Baz, Redding and Rossi, who returned to fifth position after changing tires. Redding attacks the Frenchman, taking third position. Valentino Rossi doesn't seem to be able to catch those in front and is actually threatened by Danilo Petrucci, who after the podium at Silverstone, the first of his career, is also a great protagonist here.

Last km of the race, Marc Marquez goes on to win the fourth race of the year, an unprecedented podium with Smith and Redding. Valentino Rossi finishes fifth and now has a 23 point lead over Lorenzo in the world championship.

Well done MM. It's worth today if he screwed me up, he should have come back sooner in my opinion. Bad luck for giorgi...but that's what racing is too.

You could say that Rossi made a mistake, but if he had rejoined with Jorge with the hell he would have gained 11 points on Lorenzo.

They would have raced as a pair, and in my opinion he would have lost points to Jorge who was the fastest in the dry.

Lorenzo took risks for the first time and lay down for the first time.

With this trend the title is closer for Rossi, but he must continue to be very lucky.

Now Lorenzo will have to take more risks and race like Marquez, so he could still take home the world championship, even without Rossi's mistakes, it certainly becomes more interesting especially the duel between Marc and Jorge who will want to win them all with Marc who doesn't make calculations and Jorge who he has to do a few.

However, Rossi is in a difficult position, if he calculates too much he won't win the world championship, if he calculates too little and falls I'm back there with him and the world championship slips through his fingers.

This GP is another blow to Jorge's morale, and if we want to be honest, given the gap at the finish line, not even Marc made the right strategy and neither did the others, who arrived behind the first 4 because someone who took the lead came second. the slicks, the third fell, the fourth had a museum motorbike…

In short, everyone made the wrong tactic looking at how far ahead they got, certainly Rossi Pedrosa and the Ducatis really made huge mistakes in evaluating the race.

Rossi and Lorenzo have the excuse that in the world championship they are on the run and could have allowed the mistake and played on each other.

If only you had been there in the Yamaha garage Ronnie... if only you had been there we would now be talking about Rossi's victory... you're wasted on this blog :)

I don't think so, I think that Rossi made the right choice, even if I don't know if it was wanted or not.

In my opinion, Rossi would have lost to Lorenzo in the dry, so staying out and being followed and misleading Lorenzo was the best choice, even if Lorenzo hadn't crashed, how much would he have gained over Rossi?
      10 seconds?

Would he perhaps have finished fourth by taking how many? 13 points?
Rossi would finish sixth taking 10 points.

Rossi would have lost 3 points, if they came back first, Lorenzo could have won and Rossi finished third, if they came back a bit later Lorenzo second and maybe Rossi third.

Lorenzo could gain little by following Rossi, and Rossi therefore lose little, everything else was given away by Jorge.

I don't know if in such a short time Rossi could have been so astute or if they stayed out out of stubbornness, but what he chose with Jorge following him, even if he threw away a podium placement or perhaps in a remote case the victory, it's what allowed him to lose fewer points, then in the end he gained some so based on how it ended I'd say that Rossi made the right choice for the world championship.

Durim saying that Rossi Pedrosa and the Ducatis made a huge mistake I'm talking about the gaps.

That is, I don't know when Rossi Lorenzo and Marquez were in front how much they had on those behind, but they were out too many laps plus even Marquez could have come back 2 laps earlier than he did.

Rossi took 33 seconds from Marquez who in turn lost capital on Smith, but above all on Redding and Baz.

This means that Marquez had lost something like at least 30 or 40 seconds, maybe even a minute on Smith and Redding.

On lap fourteen Redding was 1 minute and 14 seconds behind the top 3, he finished 6 seconds behind Marc Marquez and 28 seconds ahead of Rossi.

True Marc and Rossi changed bikes and the bike change meant they lost around 22-23 seconds, but damn Marc left us another 50 seconds, Rossi 1 minute and twenty...

      1. Ronnie said:

I correct on lap fourteen Smith was 1 minute and 17 seconds behind the top 3, and finished 6 seconds behind Marquez, 27 or 28 ahead of Rossi.

The riders are on motorbikes, they don't stay at home like you Ronnie. A focused driver, in the race, in those conditions, with those opponents doesn't think about those things. The riders are focused on riding the bike and the reason why Rossi was not very clear is precisely because he was focused on the race and on Lorenzo. Had they changed together with Marquez Lorenzo could have even won the race and Rossi finished 3rd or 4th. Then...it's useless now why he is right with the "if he", "if not" "if he had".

You're really boring anyway, one of the most boring users on the blog.
        Hi Ronnie

Ligeraaaaaa….!!! Did you perhaps think that I had forgotten about you..??? I call you incompetent because of the story of the copied settings, first because I haven't seen the broadcast, who knows what you understood, certainly not much given your skills... then because the exact opposite was said in other broadcasts and lastly because at the beginning of the last championship, after yet another test that went badly, Rossi himself said "we also tried to copy Lorenzo's setting but it was worse than better because his settings don't go with my riding style" So as you can see you are INCOMPETENT…..!!!! CMQ NOW THERE ARE 23 POINTS… HAPPY WISHES…….,………………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rossi was lucky and Lorenzo wasted. After 16 races in which Rossi finished on the podium, he finished fifth but earned points. And he made a big error of judgement, he really could have lost all the advantage he had over Lorenzo.

In any case, if Rossi doesn't crash I doubt Lorenzo can steal 23 from him considering that on Sepang Motegi and p. island Rossi is going strong :)

    I'll be brief 😀
Happy for Vale (psychological devastation on Lorenzo and nice haul), happy for Marc who had an excellent view of the race and, honestly, I'm sorry that Jorge crashed.
This World Championship is scary: every race offers a surprise, emotions, predictions are overturned...
Vale honestly could have scored a few more points, I had the impression that his was just a psychological tactic to demonstrate to his teammate that in difficult situations he remains number 1
Wrong tactics, perhaps, but to dot the i's given that they are playing for the world championship.
    The result?
Unfortunately Vale interrupts the cycle of podiums but Jorge strips and flies to the ground...
This is the MGP and this year, regardless of the final result... I would say that the usual 4 can only disappear or if they appear... reconsider their general opinion.

It was a crazy race, the kind that happens every now and then.

And it was also the competition of those who "had nothing to lose" (pass this saying to me).

The two from Yamaha are "forced" to man each other in these conditions, and given the situation, it's easy to make a mistake.
The two are playing for something big, they can't take unnecessary risks.
And this race is the demonstration of how much it weighs to play for the most important victory.

They are phenomena, they go to the maximum and it's a moment to even get a 0 let's also consider today's conditions…. They pull so much that even in dry conditions it's a snap to hit the ground, let alone in these conditions.

5 races left, everything is still open, fantastic World Championship!!!

I think that both Rossi and his team screwed up by not allowing him to enter the pits, the fact is that if Rossi had returned to the pits immediately, Giorgina MAYBE would not have crashed.
In the end, on one hand he can be happy because he got many more points than he thought, but on the other disappointed because he didn't win or finish on the podium.

Ps: another piece of the puzzle has been added, the tithe is near.

    1. Ronnie said:

Better to have 23 points than 0 but let's remember that a screw-up could put him back on par with or behind Lorenzo, just look at what happened to Pirro at the most inopportune moment and without his fault the race is compromised.

Also thinking about 2006 it takes very little to lose a world championship, and Lorenzo and Marquez are not Hayden, in short I think Rossi will have a lot of pressure on him until he crosses the finish line in Valencia.

Today Lorenzo and Rossi made a big mistake in their strategy, Valentino more than anyone, as he certainly couldn't have expected that Jorge wouldn't come in at a certain point...

In my opinion, Valentino feared a bike change (in the first one he had lost almost 4″) and stayed out hoping to gain on his rival, but so he didn't realize (or didn't want to) that he was losing too many seconds...

Lorenzo should instead eat his hands: he had the podium in his pocket, and six points recovered from the Pesaro team... instead he exaggerated due to his insecurity.

Despite this, I still see the Spaniard as the favourite.
