Dovizioso's Ducati savors the podium but has to surrender to Marquez's comeback

MotoGP Le Mans: Pedrosa wins, Rossi falls, Lorenzo gets "lost", Marquez's masterpiece comebackMotoGP Le Mans: Pedrosa wins, Rossi falls, Lorenzo gets "lost", Marquez's masterpiece comeback

The French Grand Prix in the MotoGP class saw Dani Pedrosa triumph, who after dueling for a long time with the Ducati of the great Andrea Dovizioso went on to win his second race of 2013 after the success obtained in Jerez two weeks ago. The Honda rider ran a great race, especially considering the extremely treacherous conditions of the wet asphalt on the French track.

Illustrious riders like Valentino Rossi paid the price, who then got back on his Yamaha M1, finishing only in twelfth position. A race to forget at Yamaha, in addition to Rossi also Lorenzo, in fact, after a very good start, he ran a terrible race, finishing in seventh position and losing ground in terms of the world championship. A race that made Ducati fans dream, with Dovizioso in the lead for a long time but who in the end had to surrender to the "furious" comeback of Marc Marquez, who started badly and managed to climb to third place thanks to fast laps of the podium. Immediately in front of him was a stoic Cal Crutchlow (who ran with a small fracture of the tibial plateau) and who therefore finished second in Team Tech 3's home race.

Pedrosa is now first in the world championship standings with 83 points against the 77 of his team-mate Marc Marquez. Jorge Lorenzo is losing ground and now has 66 points against Cal Crutchlow's 55, Valentino Rossi's 47 and Andrea Dovizioso's 39.

Race report

Fourth race of the 2013 season for the riders of the MotoGP class. It runs on the historic Le Mans circuit, on French soil. Yesterday, with the new qualifying format (everything is played out in 15 minutes in the "time attack"), the world leader Marc Marquez won pole in the Top Class (with his second pole in MotoGP after the one achieved in Austin), who had beaten the reigning champion and compatriot Jorge Lorenzo by just 30 thousandths. Surprisingly, the Ducati of the excellent Andrea Dovizioso is in the front row with them, starting from the top of the grid for the first time.

Second row for the Yamaha SAT of Cal Crutchlow's Team Tech 3 and for the Honda RC213V of Stefan Bradl (Team CLR) and Dani Pedrosa, riding the internal team's bike. Valentino Rossi will instead start from the third row with the eighth fastest time. The Yamaha rider from Pesaro is sandwiched between Bautista's Honda and Bradley Smith's Yamaha. The first CRT is that of Aleix Espargarò, eleventh and ahead of his teammate, the French Randy de Puniet. Everything is ready, it's raining, the race is therefore declared wet, 28 laps to go (for 117.18 km), the traffic lights go out, the fastest at the start is Andrea Dovizioso, with the Ducati. The rider from Forlì made a splendid start which allowed him to be ahead of Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Bradl, Hayden and Rossi. Marc Marquez started off very badly and was only eighth.

The first lap ends, Dovizioso is in the lead ahead of Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Bradl, Rossi, Hayden, Crutchlow, Marquez and Iannone. Rossi's attack, the Yamaha rider from Pesaro passes Bradl.

Beautiful race, Dovizioso continues to lead while Rossi gets behind the leaders. Pedrosa attacks, the Honda rider passes Lorenzo taking second place. Meanwhile, Bryan Staring, a Team Gresini driver driving a CRT, falls without physical consequences.

Pedrosa follows Dovizioso, while Rossi is with the leaders. Andrea Dovizioso continues to lead the race, having been ahead of everyone for four laps already. Pedrosa tries to attack, passes but goes a little wide and the former Honda and Yamaha rider takes the lead again. Rossi is closing in on Lorenzo at the back, while Marquez is eighth, also taking a risk. Lorenzo loses positions, also passed by Hayden, and with Bradl there to tail him with the German managing to pass. Pedrosa passes in front, the Spaniard is once again in the lead, the duel with the #4 Ducati was beautiful, his attack was "millimetric".

Marquez goes strong behind and manages to get the better of a Lorenzo in great difficulty. The reigning Yamaha champion is eighth and his position is "threatened" by Alvaro Bautista, a "prawn" race for the Majorcan who risks losing a lot of ground even in the general classification.

Meanwhile, a pale sun comes out, the Bridgestone soft rain tires could suffer a little towards the end of the race. After half the race we have Pedrosa in the lead ahead of an amazing Andrea Dovizioso on the Ducati, a stoic Cal Crutchlow, who is racing with a micro fracture of the tibial plateau, Valentino Rossi's Yamaha (a difficult race to decipher so far) and to Nicky Hayden's Ducati, who is now attached" to the Pesaro-based Yamaha.

Unfortunately Stefan Bradl falls! Even Valentino Rossi imitates him!! The nine-time world champion's race is now compromised! Having lost the front of his M1, he also risked involving the innocent Hayden, who runs just a little wide. It's a shame for the rider from Pesaro who was still running a good race, even if not up to the standards of the leaders. Marquez, now fifth and "seeing" Hayden, benefits from this.

Meanwhile, Crutchlow is very close to the Ducati in front, which would still be on the podium, given that Hayden and Marquez are over five seconds apart. Lorenzo is still seventh and ahead of Ducati tester Michele Pirro, who here replaces the injured Ben Spies in Team Pramac. Marquez attacks (who is riding very fast), now fourth, with Hayden's Ducati fifth. Attack from Crutchlow, the British rider from Team Tech 3 takes second position in what is his Team's home race.

Last 4 laps, Marquez turns very fast, now he sees Crutchlow and Dovizioso. It would be a joke for Ducati to lose the podium like this, but the talented Honda rider is making a wonderful comeback, which if it ended with the podium would be truly spectacular. #93 attack on the outside of the Ducati, Dovizioso isn't up for it, but at the moment he has to give up. Marquez is on the "virtual" podium. At this point, given the times, there could be a sprint finish between Crutchlow and Marquez, who if he finished second would still write a fantastic page in the "history" of his debut in MotoGP.

Final corners, Pedrosa goes on to win his second race of 2013, the 24th in MotoGP. On the podium a stoic Crutchlow and a great Marc Marquez. Dovizioso finishes fourth ahead of team-mate Hayden, who preceded Bautista and Lorenzo. Rossi, who returned to the track after the fall, finished twelfth.

Ok… great pedro…. great cal…. and also good at ducati...

Well done... shame about the slip... it could fit...

Anonymous lore... I couldn't judge it...

But a parenthesis on the parallel Rossi-ducati Dovi-ducati must be made...

Remember who won last year... a certain stoner... and who didn't win where...

Look at the final positions, and the gap that there was with Hayden last year and the one that the American had today on Andrea... ;)

    Just to say…

Having said that, a heart-pounding race... well done guys...!!! :)

Leaving aside Vale who, in my opinion, if he didn't crash he would have been within reach of the podium... seeing Lorenzo (a dull race can happen) who even if he doesn't win he's still on the podium... it could be that this year's Yamaha is inferior to last year's?

I beg to differ. The track last year was much wetter than this year. I'm going from memory, I could be wrong. This year after half the race it was almost dry on the line. As long as it was wet both Dovizioso and Hayden were fighting for the podium. In my opinion, Marquez's amazing comeback was also somehow "helped" by the weather. But nothing takes away from the Spaniard's immense talent. Finally Rossi didn't seem so good to me, I think that if he had remained standing he could at most have fought with Hayden for fifth place. Lorenzo surprised in a negative way. It's already getting tough for the World Cup.

…well done Fabio…perfect analysis!!! Even this morning in similar conditions Marc was very fast while on a wet track it was clear that he wasn't at his best... in races you also need c++oe, even if many say no, this is the proof... in any case, even if it had rained, the winner probably wouldn't have changed...Pedro is really strong and has improved a lot over the course of his career...maybe there could have been a podium for Ducati because in the wet the bike has better grip but the ifs and buts leave the time that they find….anyway you're right, last year the track was much wetter…damn, I'm almost serious…I'll get back to it straight away: today's geriatrician's race? ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah!!!

It's been since the second race that I've been saying that Rossi has less than Lore... while you have always been obstinate about the omnipotence of the Martian stoner... even when he was behind Pedro...

Vale had a decent race... Lore, in order not to lie down, had an anonymous race...

My champion certainly made a better impression than Lore today, he had more, but staying standing was a challenge... you weren't the ones who judged beyond the numbers... ;)

And anyway, use calmer tones, we can discuss without necessarily descending to the level of fatman.

Is it Dovi or his twin who at the end of the race (except today) repeats the same words as Capirossi, Melandri, Stoner, Rossi for 10 years now?

If Rossi is overrated, what are the others?

Allow me to add that when they changed the tires (2012) during the championship in progress, Vale wanted Ducati to vote like Yamaha (what the CRTs said frankly has no influence), they adopted the new tires and Vale immediately began to fail to reach at the end of the race, so much so that he then had to "steal" Hayden's set-ups in order to finish them.
Unfortunately, the tire problem for Ducati is an old story, born a year ago, with Vale's approval.

It seems to me that this race has decreed a series of great truths:
    1. The Honda is on a different level than any other bike. Stellar.
    2. Pedrosa won, but Marquez is truly from another planet!!!! I like this guy more every day!
    3. Crutchlow is increasingly a phenomenon, however there is no explanation why the two official Yamahas are suffering so much!
    4. Ducati apparently on top, but then you look at the numbers (which are the only thing that matters!) Today's gap from the leader is the exact same as last year, that is, 10 seconds. Except that last year Rossi was on the second step of the podium.
    5. Rossi Chapter: he is certainly no longer the Super Champion he was until 2010, but he is also not the hotshot that old and new trolls want us to believe. Above all, the new 1 minute qualifications distort the reality of the facts. They disgust me.

And now, dear troll friends of this blog, unleash hell!!!,!

You're wrong about me..., everyone speaks for themselves ;-)

as long as there was Almirante in the world I voted for him, then (until the last votes) for Berlusconi and I am an anti-communist/Christian Democrat of a certain type to the core.

Secondly but not of secondary importance, since August 2013 (I've only been on the forum for a short time) I have always said that I support Vale but even if they don't win the world championship I could care less; he already has 9 on his board: one more or less, you'll understand... I rather like the Vale of melee.

I like all the riders (from Marc who I like very much) to the last one who gives emotions and I often wish that the best one wins, regardless of my preferences.

Many people think like me, I think: the difference lies in the fact that in order to say something towards a driver you never liked (that's okay, of course) you often look for a verbal argument.

Think about two years from now with Marc... he's already pissing you off ;-) and you can't help but like this rider..., right?

He's very good and, as someone I don't remember said, he's a great protector, worse than me ;-);-)

For some it will be a drama, they will never be at peace until 2030... hahaha

Lastly... there are too many concrete pleasures in life to die for one driver or another...

But what do I care, what do I care...

Health, serenity, family (g@nocca if single), these are the true pleasures... of course ;-)

I don't think so, the numbers give the reality of things, they don't tell the truth.

Villeneuve (father), if it were by the numbers, would be "just" an excellent driver, but if you talk to anyone who saw him in action (I don't count), they will tell you that he was a driving phenomenon.

I believe that with this race Honda with Pedrosa, but also and above all with Marquez has demonstrated that, as in 2003 with Rossi and in 2011 with Stoner, it is the best and largely dominant bike of this season, such superiority is deserved, both by the riders as much as the motorbike.

Pedrosa and Marquez were far from perfect, both made some mistakes and long ones and yet they had more and quite a bit compared to their opponents. The Hondas showed that they have a lot of margin between riding with the others and raising the bar and going full throttle.

Dovizioso did a perfect race with very few mistakes and yet he was unable to obtain Rossi's results in recent seasons, and I believe in part that this is also and above all thanks to Honda which certainly has even more competitive bikes.

Crutchlow surprised me halfway, Le Mans is the Team Tech III circuit, they tested here in almost all conditions so the result in these conditions could have been predicted, even if Cal also drove a rather perfect race, always to the limit and he is the one who perhaps deserved the result the most, because it is the result of his and his team's work, just look at what the other Yamahas have done.

In my opinion, Lorenzo either had problems with the tires or had a full wet set-up, because he started "slowly" as usual in these conditions and progressed, until the moment in which the track gradually dried out and from there he lost one position after another.

Rossi started off strong and in my opinion he too did not have a set up as perfect as Cal's, so much so that Hayden kept pace with him and indeed, in the fall it almost seemed that Rossi had not forced the braking and insertion too much, while Hayden was he entered faster and didn't even risk falling at that entrance, or rather he didn't risk it until the moment he had to avoid Rossi, and it went well for him and he was good because he could have finished his race there too.

    1. light said:

Vale fell because he was shooting.
Look at the timesheets of the intermediates, you can see that he was forcing himself. In the first intermediate he made his best time (2-3 tenths faster than the previous laps), in the second almost (9 hundredths worse than his best intermediate n°2), in the third he fell, but shortly before he had done 1.44.0 , just one lap, Vale's second best lap was 1.44.5, five tenths faster than his second best time. In my opinion he was pulling badly. Why? I don't know, but seeing red at the front and red at the back must have bothered him quite a bit, Hayden was even recovering, 13th lap 1.44.6, 14th lap 1.44.9 15th lap 1.44.3 16th lap 1.44.2, then on the 17th Vale fell on lap

      1. Ronnie said:

Yes he certainly wasn't walking, it's normal he had Hayden who was recovering.
What I meant is that from the images it seemed that he wasn't forcing the braking too much, because Hayden, arriving stronger at that point, didn't fall.

Hayden and Rossi were going at their maximum, then Rossi crashed and if you look at the laps, Hayden realized he was at his limit too and suddenly raised his pace by 1 or 2 seconds per lap so as not to end up like Rossi .

Certainly if he fell it was because he went beyond the limit that his bike had at that moment.

In the end Rossi did one of his classic races under the water, it's all or nothing. When the track is wet, Rossi is a bit like Stoner in Ducati and in some races in Honda he goes all out or 1 or 0, it's not like he's there doing a lot of calculations, moreover this year the world championship is certainly not being played so I think who will take a few more risks in the race is not obliged to think like Pedroda but above all Lorenzo.

I understand that talking about today's race is annoying to say the least, but...
He may not have come second, and this is crystal clear, but he certainly gave, finally, a crumb of hope to Ducati, something that has never happened in previous years.
He did an excellent qualifying; almost with all certainty in dry conditions he would not have achieved a 4th, but without a shadow of a doubt, with a bike still almost at a standstill in development, he was able to withstand the brawl until a few laps from the end.
If we really have to make a parallel, the bike certainly needs to be improved, a lot and everywhere, but at the rider level, rest assured that we are in a decidedly better position this year: first of all, a humility capable of surprising, a dedication to be rewarded, a calm truly surprising and driving skills that certainly don't make us regret Valentino so far.
I could be wrong, but when we do the math at the end of the year I say that Dovi will have more points than Rossi in past seasons and then these (useless) comparisons with previous years will immediately fall like a ripe pear tree.

Having said that, super overtaking by Pedrosa, a great race, uncertain at the start but then dominated beautifully.
Great handle Marquez, it amazes more and more!
Cal, truly excellent performance, even more so when compared to that of the two officers, who today got lost in who knows what maze.
    Lorenzo ?????
Rossi had a decent race until the fall, which was also the only one among the top riders.

It's difficult to say how the season will end, but I think it will be more difficult for Dovizioso to score more points, because apart from Le Mans, Ducati seems to me to be less in difficulty but more in difficulty.

In the sense that Dovizioso is doing well as a rider, but the other bikes, as in past seasons, are more competitive and apart from Smith, the others have certainly improved even further.

In my opinion, the points match at the end of the season will be an unrepresentative comparison. We will also have to see how things go with crashes and any injuries.

And above all he imposed himself on stoners…

He didn't take them from Pedro...

But how can you draw a parallel with last year?? According to what you say then Rossi didn't take them from Pedrosa but he took them from Lorenzo who won and this year he finished 1st. As long as the track was wet the Ducati was perfectly capable of fighting for the podium. I respect Rossi for what he did, now it's half the rate of past years and he deserves recognition. And in any case it is not very convenient to compare Rossi's results with those of Dovi in Ducati...

And why is it not convenient to compare Rossi and Dovi?

        Are you sure?

After the fourth race in the last 3 years, these are the results:

        2011

        5 Valentino ROSSI Ducati 47

        2012

        6 Valentino ROSSI Ducati 42

        2013

        6 Andrea DOVIZIOSO Ducati 39

The results are slightly in favor of Vale, and in France the fact remains that he impressed more.

Hi, Dovi had a great race: I'm happy for him, Hyden and above all Ducati.

As Fatman said in another post however... this race says little in terms of values.

Especially if we look at Vale's two "really mediocre" years in Ducati (without going into the usual merits or demerits) in terms of positions Dovi took them... and both Pedro and Jorge were there.

Marc wasn't there but, if I remember correctly... ;-) the werekangaroo was still running...

If anything... the real wish for Ducati, for its fans and also for me as a Bolognese is this: I hope it's not a flash in the pan of favorable circumstances (track/rain) for the red and already from the next race... usual long faces.

I continue here as further up there is a brothel.

You stated that so far he has done better than he is worth.
    The numbers say no. Point.

Now you tell me "let's wait for half the championship"...
A bit like you told me halfway through the last championship when Stoner was behind Pedro and Lore...
We wait for the end of the championship... and in fact he finished behind.

Now you'll tell me that he finished behind because he fell, and I might even agree with you, but then, observing your judgments on today's race, I'll say:

Whatever you say, if Stoner fell, whatever... he was looking for the limit and he fell...

Even today he fell while trying to reach the limit... and I too could say that if he hadn't slipped he would now be much closer to them in the rankings, and we would therefore be talking about something else... but that wasn't the case.

    You always have double standards.

  • Stonami77 said:

...don't twist the reasoning the way you want...certainly when I said let's wait for the end of the championship it was before the injury (after Germany and Mugello) probably after Laguna and before Indy...when Honda seemed to have solved Chatter's problems with the introduction of the new frame (which Stoner strangely didn't use)..then the Australian is injured, he missed 4 races and ran the last 4 as an impaired person...even if I'm a fan of his I don't consider myself so stupid as not to understand that at that point it was impossible for Casey to fight for the title and stay ahead of Jorge and Dani... maybe he would have gotten it even without the accident but I remember that in Laguna he had won by force and in Indy with only 15 minutes of testing he started 6th in grid, had always shown FP in the lead both in terms of pace and times...let's wait until the end anyway to have a Dovi - Rossi comparison...certainly Dovi is not doing worse than 9 times...he seems more at ease on the bike, furthermore the Ducati it seems like a cumbersome weight has been lifted... in my opinion they work more relaxed... I'll repeat my opinion on Rossi today: He certainly won't win his 10th title, in the best of scenarios he could win a maximum of 1-2 races, he won't always fight for the podium...and he will do less than Dani, Jorge and Marc...he will finish 4/5th in the championship.

  • enea said:

But look, you're the one turning the conversation around...
    ;)

You didn't say that Dovi isn't doing worse than Vale, you literally stated: "Andrea is doing better than Rossi", and this is simply not true, what more do we have to talk about?

The points say it, and the tone of his post-match interviews confirms it, which is even worse than the Rossi era.
Except at Le Mans, but even Rossi was happy after the Le Mans race... he was certainly happier than Andrea... ;)

Look back at the interview after Jerez... where he is not only resigned, but even sarcastic about the update they would have tried, which was practically the bike that Pirro was riding...

You persist in saying that Dovi is doing better, just to belittle what little he has done is worth it, when it would be very simple to admit that the problem there is ducats.
Maybe the new management will put a patch on it, but so far the results and interviews with both Hayden and Andrea tell us that nothing has changed.

Regarding stoner, I'm not a sucker.

I know that Stoner, without injury, would probably have won the world championship, I know what a great rider he is, I give my judgments based on how you judge his worth.
You are cynical, so am I.

Every time you are told that Rossi had a serious injury in 2010, so he was unable to fight for the world championship, all the Stonerians remembered how he was already behind before the accident...

Stoner was also behind before the accident, so I'm cynical like you, and I don't give a damn if Stoner was actually in the world championship.
    You understand?

Regarding Vale, I know well that the current Vale will hardly be able to compete with the best, I've been saying this for a long time.
    So we're in agreement here.

    Aeneas

    1. Stonami77 said:

..Ok ..so by the way: Dovi is not doing worse than Rossi..anyway we will see at the end of the world championship whether it will be the case to draw conclusions for or against Dovizioso..Ducati has had the usual problems for some time..but it seems to me that the riders are quite confident in the company's ability to solve them... Rossiani's development over the two years has led to nothing or little... let's see if Andrea will be able to provide better indications... he won't have the handle of Rossi or the other champions but I consider him a top driver and first and foremost a very serious guy and an excellent (if not one of the best) test drivers...

... you're out of tune, it's calm... you're a little less so... if you want, prepare the match... heavyweight against featherweight... or "cock" if you prefer ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah…when I laugh I'm unbeatable…and I even get back in shape!!!

I'm very calm too, but it bothers me that you get involved in a discussion without having anything to say... ;)

Get in shape, because if you continue like this you'll need it... the fact that he's not a fat guy doesn't mean he's a featherweight... you can swear by it. ;)

if Dovi does better than Vale in ducati, the calculations can only be done at the end of the season. in any case, it may well be that he is better suited in terms of riding style but the fact remains that he too (as per his own admission) is struggling to achieve sixth place in the dry conditions precisely because the Ducati is still far from the Japanese pacesetters.

having said this, I reiterate as a fan of the doctor, that he no longer has a say in the MotoGP, those young men up front go faster, there's little to say, he just has to try the SBK road.
