MotoGP 2015 Jerez – Jorge Lorenzo dominated the Spanish Grand Prix in the MotoGP class. The two-time Yamaha world champion, after the pole obtained yesterday, today won his first race of the season. An overwhelming success, which left no "escape" for the opponents. This is the 34th victory for the Majorcan in MotoGP, a victory that brings him -20 behind Valentino Rossi, today at his 200th career podium. Difficult race for the Ducatis, with Iannone sixth and Dovizioso ninth at the finish line. The rider from Vasto had a problem at the start, while the one from Forlì, after a straight shot in the first laps, was back in last position. Dovizioso still maintains second position in the championship, -15 behind Rossi, who is still the world championship leader.

Race report

First European race of the season for the MotoGP class riders. The Gran Premio bwin de Espana is held on the Jerez de la Frontera circuit. Starting from pole position will be the two-time MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo, author of the new record on the Andalusian track with a time of 1'37.910. In the front row with him his compatriot and reigning champion Marc Marquez and our Andrea Iannone, who took the new Ducati GP15 to the top.

Valentino Rossi will start from the second row, having set the fifth fastest time. The Yamaha rider is between the Espargarò brothers, with Pol (Yamaha) fourth and Aleix (Suzuki) sixth. Behind Rossi will start the Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso from Forlì, author of the eighth fastest time, while Danilo Petrucci from Terni will start from the eleventh spot on the grid.

The best Aprilia is that of the Spaniard Alvaro Bautista, author of the fifteenth time, while his team-mate Marco Melandri closes the grid of the grid, behind the Art of Iodaracing of the San Marino Alex de Angelis. All ready, 34th in the air, 36 ° on asphalt, 27 laps to go for 119.421 km. The traffic lights go out, the fastest at the start is poleman Jorge Lorenzo, who started ahead of Marquez, Pol Espargarò, Rossi, Aleix Espargarò, Crutchlow, Dovizioso and Smith. Bad start for Andrea Iannone, who lost many positions. The Ducati rider is eleventh.

The first lap ends with Lorenzo in the lead, but with a very aggressive Marquez who doesn't let his Yamaha compatriot escape. Problem for Dovizioso! The Ducati rider goes wide and even comes back last. His race is already compromised.

Rossi meanwhile moves into third position, but the first two have a decent advantage. Unlike Argentina, here the big names have all made the same choice of tyres, hard on the front and medium on the rear. Meanwhile, Mike di Meglio, Ducati Open Avintia rider, falls. Lorenzo seems to be able to get ahead of Marquez's Honda, who we remember here is racing with a fracture of the little finger of his left hand. The Majorcan is lapping 3/4 tenths faster per lap and his advantage is now more than two seconds. Valentino Rossi is lapping slower than Lorenzo but with times close to those of Marquez, who actually seems to be able to catch up on the reigning Honda champion lap after lap. Andre Iannone recovered up to seventh position, but is far from the top, while his teammate Andrea Doviziso is thirteenth after his initial exit.

Once we reach the halfway point of the race we find Lorenzo on the run, with more than four seconds ahead of Marquez, who in turn precedes Rossi by just over two. Meanwhile, Iannone is fighting with Aleix Espargarò's Suzuki for sixth position, while Danilo Petrucci is ninth and ahead of teammate Yonny Hernandez. Iannone attacks, the #41 Suzuki responds, but then has to surrender to the rider from Vasto, who now goes after Pol Espargarò, Aleix's brother.

Meanwhile, the comeback of Andrea Dovizioso continues, now tenth and chasing Petrucci, while Rossi is increasingly closer to Marquez. He attacks the Forlì native, who moves up to ninth position, while Hernandez overtakes Petrucci.

Five laps to go, Valentino Rossi, after gaining ground on Marquez, begins to lose something. Second position is now further away, the reigning champion extends his lead to over two seconds. The fight for tenth position was exciting, with Petrucci now ahead of his teammate Hernandez, who in turn had to defend himself from the Suzuki of Maverick Vinales, the Honda Factory of Scott Redding and the Ducati Open of the Spaniard Hector Barberà. The last lap begins, Lorenzo goes on to win his first race of the season, Marquez and Rossi on the podium, Iannone finishes sixth.

maybe you understand more about that...

rubber or not, until now the "old man" has always been on the podium, and he is the only one.

    NO?!?!??!

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Great race from Jorge, it was clear that he would win...Marc tried but it wasn't his day.
    Valentino, third I thought better.

However Lorenzo during the celebrations made us die laughing, first he breaks his flag and leaves it there, then he tries to throw himself into the pond but then thinks better of it and comes back Hahaha

Great race from Lorenzo who got the set up right and made the difference throughout the weekend.

I think that Rossi and Marquez were very lucky with the low temperatures, lower than the other days, because they maintained paces that they would not have maintained at the end of the race. It seemed to me that they both slipped a lot.

Rossi certainly wasn't able to set up the bike like Lorenzo here, a bit like what happened to Jorge before for example in Austin.

Marquez however remained very consistent despite the finger problem, Jorge especially made the difference in the first half of the race.

Maybe with a race with Marquez at 100% there would have been a bit of a duel at the start of the race, but Jorge was too fast for too long.
Here he proved to be truly at the top, let's hope he stays that way for the next races.

Today there were the best 3 on the podium, for now it remains a very open world championship, and even Dovizoso, who wasn't on his favorite circuit today, will be able to get back into the game.

Practically the same photocopy comment from Enea: great Lorenzo who returns to victory, great Marc who comes second with his injured hand and great Vale who manages to get on the podium.

It's a shame for Dovizioso, if he hadn't taken the forehand I think he would have finished at least fourth or fifth.

By the way: 200 podiums including 3 out of 3 this year, not a bad start…

Lorenzo (playing at home, like Marquez) did his best (one-off...), Marquez is downsizing, for 2 years he was above everyone else
(with great luck), now he is "human" again, he remains great, but not the only one, Rossi never ceases to amaze being the "old man" of the world championship, which of the 3 will be the strongest second

After Argentina, Rossi's detractors will return to visit and comment on the site, we have seen some timid signs.

Having written this little provocation, let's move on to the competition.

Frankly, a very boring race compared to the standards we are used to in recent times.
After a few laps we had the full podium.

It's still a great performance from Jorge, he dominated in all the sessions, in short it was fantastic and seeing him drive is really nice. Clean, linear, very few flaws (even if I personally get "excited" by other guides).
He reminds me of Max, he always seemed calm and outwardly, driving effortlessly.
Well done Jorge, he had one of his races... Off to a flying start, leave the other riders there and check.

Marc is also great, he tried in the first laps to stay there, but Jorge had more, there's little he can do.
Frankly, however, I still see him (barring unforeseen stops), I still see him as the winner of the Title, and in my opinion he will win it again (his qualifying lap in Austin alone deserves 1 title).

Rossi defended himself, saved what could be saved, given the difficulties he had.

Too bad for the two Ducatis, a real shame. But at least Dovi gave us a good comeback.

Cal confirms once again that he is absolutely not the rider seen in Ducati.

However, some riders are disappointing me... Redding (I expect much, much more from him) Melandri Nicky and Bradl.

The positive thing about this season is that up until now, Marquez has been beatable. Everyone was forced to have almost perfect weekends to win.

Marquez to Austin Rossi in Argentina and Lorenzo in Jerez.

If they bet everything on a choice and carry it out with determination and are lucky on race day, driving at their Top, they manage to win.
This certainly helps keep the show open. Here Lorenzo not only demonstrated that Yamaha is better in the race this year but that they can go faster in qualifying.

It's paradoxical, but it seems that the more tires they save during the FPs, or the more they use the same tires, taking them to the limit of exploitation, and obviously without falling and ruining the tires and bike, the more they fine-tune the bike for the race. Furthermore, they can do the 3 outings tactic in qualifying precisely because they save a tire during practice.
I believe they can do it especially where they race with the same tire they used in qualifying.

      1. bcs said:

More than anything, at the moment it is a very balanced Championship, in the sense that there is not just one dominator.

Then in my opinion Marc is always the man to beat and for me he will win the title again (to date).
Except obviously for injuries or other things.

We are still at the beginning and obviously everything is still open.

It must also be written, however, that Marc is alone in the garage, so many comparisons and comparisons (as they do in Yamaha and Ducati) cannot be made in Honda.
        It's all on Marc's shoulders.

For the rest I completely agree. Yamaha works a lot during the race, with Rossi working solely for this and obviously the more you push a compound to the limit the more you are able to study it also according to the various settings, with the advantage of having more fresh tires for qualifying. And therefore more possibilities to make time.

Frankly, however, I still see Marc as the winner of the 2015 title (I hope I'm not owling, but that's my feeling).

It's also true that in these races I saw a very grumpy and dancing Honda, both in the hands of Cal and in the hands of Marc. While Yamaha and Ducati are much more balanced.

      2. Ronnie said:

It is likely that Marquez can still win, but something has certainly changed in the compounds, these are perhaps more similar to those of 2013, or in any case they give Yamaha some hope in the race. Last year I think Marquez and Honda were more comfortable with the tyres.

It seems that Bridgestone as expected has pushed hard on development for this last year. The tires from the first races are extremely competitive and I don't think it's all thanks to the bikes and the riders.

They set some crazy times here, the top 3 broke all previous race distance records from past years, and Jorge did it by an incredible margin.

Many went faster here in Jerez.
I think what may or may not play for or against Marquez will be the tyres, or the Hondas adapt or maybe from mid-championship they change a little bit and unbalance or rebalance things.

In my opinion, last year after mid-season there wasn't this big decline in Marquez and they changed the cards on the table, so as not to completely kill the championship. Like they did with Stoner.

In the sense that I believe that sometimes there are tricks behind it, not so much in favor of one rider or the other, but more in rebalancing things. I wouldn't rule out that like in 2012 we went from a Honda advantage for a Yamaha finish to something similar but in reverse this year.

In short, Yamaha must take advantage of this advantage now at the start of the championship because then perhaps they will penalize them in the second part.
Last year they did it late against Marquez, I don't know if it's just the lack of Pedrosa that has caused these counter-performances from Honda, maybe but Yamaha is far too strong in the race compared to last season, I'm not so keen crisis.

Last year, Yamaha, especially Jorge, didn't digest the tires until more than halfway through the season. They were made more for Honda and for Marquez, now they seem rebalanced for 2013, so Honda doesn't have super advantages and Yamaha manages to exploit its strong points here and there with one rider rather than the other.

      3. Durim said:

        Blah blah blah blah
BUT stop...stop reasoning in vain. Artifices? to rebalance things? Marc who can't find the tires?? Did they shuffle the cards for Marc last half of the season?
Come on..Ronnie, it's pitiful to read you. Why do you have to talk and give an opinion?!
Last year nothing changed, Marc was always the strongest, he simply crashed. Same this year, but he's still the strongest, he simply crashed or didn't find the perfect setup...no tricks or strange stuff.

Riders are people...last race Rossi was going fast and slow, this race was the opposite. They are people, the results must also be attributed to the riders, not just Dorna, regulations, bikes, etc.

      4. bcs said:

It's obviously early to talk about the title, but for me Marc will win it again.
Every time I see him he leaves me speechless as a driver, not to mention the ride in Austin, which is immense. A ride that will be remembered a lot, at least I will remember it.

The compounds changed last year in a "heavy" way (at least according to what Jorge and his father said), due to Australia, where the tire dealer brought home a barbian figure. And they ran for cover.

They also made some changes this year, but the big and most invasive changes were made last year (I repeat, these are statements from Jorge and his father, not mine. I have no element to evaluate those tires).

With Rossi feeling better (as did Marc), while Jorge wasn't. It took him a long time to adapt to these compounds (also due to the physical problems he had last year).

We can't blame the tires for Honda's "difficulties" (difficulties are in quotes eh...). Honda brought an exaggerated engine this year, very grumpy and the riders found it a little more difficult to manage it, especially in the exit phase.

They are working, but what I have seen is a more aggressive Honda, or rather slightly more grumpy (both for Marc, which is normal, but also for Cal).

Last year Yamaha (according to what they declared) took a long time to understand the bike and (their declarations) at the end of the season the improvements were not dictated by a technical detail, but rather on the refinement of the setting and balance of the bike.

Rossi (both in Honda and in the Ducati bracket) has always been more incisive in the race, compared to the flying lap, always, in all categories. He is a driver who works (a lot) exclusively for the race, and frankly in my opinion he threw away the first free practices, where they insisted too much on wanting to use and test the harder tyre. In my opinion, that's where they threw away performance on the pace... I'm not writing to win (when Jorge is like that, there's little the others can do), but at least to be closer to Marc.

Honda, like last season, in my opinion has a super advantage, but a big one. And it's not to be found in the front or under the fairings, but in what is above the saddle and gives gas. That is Marc, he is Honda's real advantage.

And at the moment he has the whole situation on his shoulders, which is not an easy task and which certainly doesn't help, given that another top rider like Pedrosa is missing.

We'll see who wins, but as of today, May 4th, I'm convinced that Marc will win the title.

      5. Ronnie said:

He may win, but doing it alone against Rossi and Lorenzo, especially if they are lucky and take turns getting the bike set up right, as they did in Argentina and Jerez and if they both do it by putting Marquez behind at the same time, it becomes difficult.

What Marquez must do is win, and if he doesn't succeed he must hope that there isn't a winner between Rossi and Lorenzo over the distance but that they are equal and take points away from each other.

      6. bcs said:

This reasoning also applies to Yamaha riders.
It's not like if Jorge wins the points Valentino will also get or vice versa.

When you're competing, it's every man for himself.
Everyone is aiming to win, and not just Marc must win.

If Jorge doesn't win he has to hope that Marc or Vale don't do it.

        As well as for Rossi.

It's like this for all the riders on the track, and whoever will be able to add or subtract points from these riders will be the Ducatis with Dovi and Iannone. That with the GP15 they can aim for important results and enter the fight among the leaders.

As I wrote above, it is too early to write about "winners" and "losers", but I repeat that for me, today 4 May, Marc will win the title.

      7. Ronnie said:

Oh yes, I also believe that it will be the Ducatis that will be able to change the game, I don't know if they will ever win in dry conditions, but certainly if the others make mistakes or don't manage to set up the bike well they can fit in in the middle. as has already happened.

It's clear that Jorge and Valentino must also win and get podiums and must not crash or be knocked off.

But they are not the reigning world champion, in short Marquez is alone and the opponents are 3 Rossi Lorenzo and Dovizioso.
It's clear that it's a free-for-all, but Jorge and Rossi remain teammates so let's say that they won't hinder each other and won't go to war while they certainly won't make life easy for Marquez.

If they get in front of him in turn, it becomes difficult for Marquez to recover, especially without another competitive rider on that bike.
I don't know if there are circuits where Yamaha will go even faster, it seems that here in Jerez for example it allowed you to compete with Marquez, while last year Marc was uncatchable, it was he who made comebacks and separated the others, in short the race times they have dropped a lot and Marc can't afford to focus much more on pole and he too will have to prepare better for the race, and here in Jerez it seems that it wasn't enough to keep Lorenzo and the injury certainly didn't help, in short for the the first half of the championship will be in difficulty, we'll see how the bikes evolve, today among other things was the test.

      8. bcs said:

Ducati has shown that it has made a big step forward, in short, they are there. Dovi has clearly stated it, they are working on the details (and I assure you that soon there will be several changes to both the chassis and, above all, the engine).

        We will see.

Everyone is against everyone Ronnie. It's not like if the others win they add the points and divide them.

        Jorge is against everyone.
Marc is against everyone and must defend the title (and I repeat he will defend it by having him return to his home).
        Etc.

Everyone is against everyone in the race, but Marc currently has the difficulty of being the only one in the official team to carry on the development of the bike. Cal is also there, but he has just arrived and certainly doesn't have that "feel" on the Honda that Pedrosa can have.

If they finish ahead of any driver in turn, this driver will never win the title.
That his name is Marc, that his name is Pinco Pallino etc.

Everyone is against everyone else in the race, and in your teammate you see the one you have to get ahead of because he has the same bike as you. In short, he's your first rival.

Then I repeat for myself whoever wins the title (barring crashes or injuries) will be Marc and frankly he deserves it just for a qualifying lap that will go down in history.
