MotoGP GP Australia Repsol Honda – Marc Marquez closed the first day of free practice for the Australian Grand Prix, the 18th stage of the 2022 MotoGP, with the sixth fastest time.

It was a busy day for Marquez as he tested a new aerodynamic package on his Honda RC213V. Initial feedback on the new package has been positive and the Spaniard will continue to use it tomorrow. Even with these new parts to test, the eight-time world champion frequently appeared at the top of the leaderboard in both free practice sessions and still finished a respectable sixth place overall. An end-of-day chat with six-time Australian MotoGP race winner Casey Stoner could help Marquez find the crucial final tenths in the incredibly close MotoGP field.

“It's not easy to test things over a weekend, but I heard some positives with the new parts in the morning. Then in the afternoon we tried it again to confirm the feedback, we took all our time to try these things and that's what you need to do if you want to improve for the future. We can see that Honda is working, even with only three races left. I will continue to use it tomorrow. Then we will see what is possible on Saturday and Sunday, the feeling with the bike is quite good and we can see that the potential is there. It's fantastic to be back at Phillip Island."
