Shinya Nakano had to deal with a lack of grip on the first day of free practice for the MotoGP class in Estoril, where the Portuguese GP, the penultimate round of the 2006 world championship, will take place on Sunday. The Japanese Kawasaki rider ultimately achieved the tenth fastest time and he said he was confident that he could improve his performance tomorrow.

“Today the track wasn't the best, there weren't the ideal conditions for lapping. The track is still very dusty and this made the choice of tires for Sunday's race difficult. This also prevented us from evaluating the changes made to the suspension. Braking stability seems to have improved but we still need to find the best setting for fast corners. I'm not worried about my lap times, when the track clears up I'm sure the times will drop."
