MotoGP – At the end of the 2022 season, the Grand Prix Commission composed of Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, President), Paul Duparc (FIM), Hervé Poncharal (IRTA) and Biense Bierma (MSMA), in the presence of Jorge Viegas (FIM), Carlos Ezpeleta (Dorna), Mike Trimby (IRTA, Meeting Secretary) and Corrado Cecchinelli (Director of Technology), in a meeting held in Valencia on 4 November 2022, made the following decisions:

Sports Regulations

Sports Regulations – Effective 2023 season (starting from 07 November 2022)

Races interrupted and restarted

The Commission has approved a change to the championship points allocation and changed the wording to make a third race less likely (especially in Moto2 and Moto3), however the regulations relating to the conditions for resuming an interrupted race remain unchanged. In summary:

– If none of the races have completed at least 3 laps, and it is not possible to restart, the race is considered void and no points will be awarded.
– If the sum of laps completed in all races (counting only races that had more than 3 laps):
– Less than 50% of the original race distance will be awarded = half points will be awarded
– More than 50% of the original race distance will be awarded = full points.

New sports format from 2023

After further consultation with the Moto3 and Moto2 teams, the Commission has confirmed a change to the sporting format introduced in 2023. For these classes only, all three free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday will continue to be timed for the purposes of progressing to Q1 and Q2.

Qualification for the race

The Commission approved the removal of Race Direction's right to, at its discretion, waive the requirement for a driver to have achieved, in any session, a lap time less than 105% of the fastest driver in that session. However, Race Direction will retain the right to this waiver for the MotoE World Championship where there are fewer practice sessions.

Technical regulations – Effective season 2023 (starting from 07 November 2022)

MotoGP class fuel capacity – Sprint races

The maximum tank capacity for sprint races has been confirmed as 12 litres.

Teams can choose to use a purpose-built fuel tank with this capacity or an alternative method of reducing the capacity in the standard tank. Other fuel tank regulations will be in line with those for full length racing, e.g. ambient fuel temperature, control method etc.

Swingarm Spoon Ground Clearance – MotoGP Class

Following an accident at the 2022 San Marino GP, where a motorbike's swingarm spoon broke following contact with a curb, it has been decided that the minimum permitted ground clearance should be increased by 15 mm, to 35mm.

Brake disc mounts – All classes

After consulting suppliers, the following regulation was confirmed:

Composite construction of the brake disc carrier (including carbon fiber reinforced, glass fiber reinforced and similar) is not permitted. The only materials allowed are magnesium and aluminum alloys.

Fuel Tanks – All classes

The material allowed for the construction of fuel tanks has been confirmed:

The main structure of the fuel tank must be made entirely of steel or aluminium. However, the use of other materials, including carbon fiber, aramid fiber and glass fiber, is permitted as an additional component where necessary to add additional rigidity and protection or for other purposes.

Pilot equipment

Overalls and zip closure

Following accidents in which the zips of the suits opened, a new closure system was agreed with the technicians and manufacturers which will become mandatory. P

Helmets

The FIM is continuing its mission to improve rider equipment and develop helmets. In line with this policy:

Only FIM approved helmets (with a valid FIM approval label) will be admitted with the following deadlines:

– Until 31/12/2025: FRHPhe-01 & FRHPhe-02- From 01/01/2026: only FRHPhe-02

A list of FIM approved helmets is available on www.frhp.org.

The resolutions of the Grand Prix Commission were approved by the Permanent Bureau.
