Jakub Kornfeil set the best time in the first free practice sessions of the German Grand Prix in the Moto3 class. The Team Redox-Ongetta-Centro Seta rider lapped in 1:29.188, placing Hector Faubel (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto18) by just 3 thousandths and Luis Salom, RW Racing GP rider, by 64 thousandths.

Fourth time for Miguel Oliveira, riding the Suter Honda of Team Estrella Galicia 0,0. The Portuguese driver preceded the Spaniards Alberto Moncayo and Maverick Vinales (who fortunately fell at turn 11 without suffering any physical consequences) and the British Danny Webb, on Mahindra. The world championship leader had to wait a long time after his crash, which was the time it took for his team (Blusens Avintia) to fix his FTR Honda.

Closing out the Top Ten are the Finn Nikjals Ajo (TT Motion Events Racing – 1:29.789), the French Alan Techer (Technomag-CIP-TSR – 1:29.810) and the British Danny Kent, on a KTM of Team Red Bull Ajo. Only twelfth was Sandro Cortese, riding the second KTM, while the first of the Italian riders was Niccolò Antonelli, sixteenth with the FTR Honda of Team Gresini. The other Italians are Simone Grotzkyj, 20th with the Suter Honda of Team Ambrogio Next Racing, Luigi Morciano (Ioda Team Italia), 25th and the two riders of Team Italia FMI, Alessandro Tonucci 30th and Romano Fenati 32nd, who however only completed a few laps due to an electrical problem which forced him to remain in the pits.
