Moto3 | Austrian GP: Rain of penalties after qualifying, Fenati loses pole
Thirteen out of sixteen drivers who took part in Q2 were penalized, the starting grid was upset
Moto3 GP Austria – Heavy hand from the FIM at the end of Qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix with 16 drivers penalised, including the pole-setter Romano Fenati. The result from Ascoli remains historic but he loses the starting point.
In essence, 13 of the 16 drivers who took part in Q2 were sanctioned for exceeding track limits and therefore had their lap cancelled.
John Mchpee (Petronas) will start from first place ahead of Romano Fenati (Snipers) and Kaito Toba. Tony Arbolino (Snipers) opens the second row preceding: Celestino Vietti (SKY Racing Team VR46), Jaume Masia, Marcos Ramirez, Lorenzo Dalla Porta, Raul Fernadez and Jakub Korfeil who completes the top ten.
Many other riders were instead penalized for irresponsible driving and received 12 penalty positions, including Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse), who will start 14th, and Riccardo Rrossi (Gresini), while Andrea Migno will have to start from the back of the grid.
