Alex De Angelis obtained pole position for the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, a GP which will take place tomorrow at 05:15 Italian time. The Team Jir rider, winner of last year's edition, won it with a time of 1'34"574. The session, affected by light rain, saw the Frenchman Mike Di Meglio finish in second place, just 88 thousandths behind the San Marino driver. The front row closes with the Japanese Yuki Takahashi, riding the Moriwaki of Team Gresini.

Scott Redding will open the second row instead. The British rider of the Marc VDS Racing Team, who is 125 thousandths behind the pole, precedes the Turkish Kenan Sofuoglu, the Spaniard Pol Espargarò, his compatriot Bradley Smith and the German Stefan Bradl, eighth. The Kalex driver will have to take advantage of the situation tomorrow Marc Marquez starts from the back of the grid if he wants to reopen the world championship, a world championship which now sees him 1 point behind the Spaniard. Closing out the Top Ten are the Swiss Thomas Luthi and our Mattia Pasini, riding the Ioda Racing FTR.

Further back Michele Pirro, Andrea Iannone, Raffaele De Rosa, Claudio Corti and Simone Corsi, in twelfth, sixteenth, nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-second positions respectively.
