The Argentinian S. Porto was the fastest in the first free practice session of the Spanish GP taking place in Jerez de la Frontera. The Aprilia Repsol rider stopped the clock with a time of 1'43"735 and preceded the Frenchman Randy De Puniet (1'44"149) and the Turin Honda Fortuna R. Rolfo (1'45"293) . Fourth time for the reigning world champion M. Poggiali (1'45"327). Elias and Nieto occupy fifth and sixth position ahead of Welkom winner D. Pedrosa (1'45"759). Eleventh time for F. Battaini from Brescia of the Campetella Racing team.
