Alex De Angelis from San Marino set the best time in the first 250 cc free practice session in Assen. The Aprilia rider lapped in 2'20"472 and preceded the Frenchman from Team Campetella S. Guintoli by 111 thousandths. Third time for the Australian West (2'21"069) who precedes the Turin R. Rolfo on Honda by 214 thousandths.
Fifth time for H.Aoyama, the Japanese rider from Team Telefonica Movistar precedes Bataille, Vincent and Poggiali.
World ranking leader R. De Puniet is only sixteenth, his direct pursuer Pedrosa is twelfth ahead of Elias.
