Surprise in the 250cc class on the Barcelona track. The first free practice session saw Alex Debon in command, setting the best time of 1'47"291 on the Aprilia of the Aeropuerto Castello Blusens team. The former Aprilia test rider succeeded in his goal of moving into first position, preceding Alvaro Bautista in this round, trailing by just 38 thousandths and leading for almost the entire session, and Hiroshi Aoyama, who is always there with the leaders.

It was not a day to remember for the Italian riders, with Mattia Pasini at times leading the ranking and, towards the end, fourth with Marco Simoncelli only seventh with some balance problems with his Gilera. Between the two of them were Mike Di Meglio and Thomas Luthi, while the Hondas of Hector Faubel and Ratthapark Wilairot closed the top ten.

Bad luck for Hector Barbera, stopped by a mechanical problem with his Aprilia, with the Italian group completed by Raffaele De Rosa, 11th, Roberto Locatelli (13th) and Alex Baldolini fifteenth.
