The German driver, but of clear Italian origins, Sandro Cortese obtained pole position at Mugello with the Derbi of the Ajo team. At the second pole of his career, Cortese got the better of Pol Espargaro who fell at the end of the session without physical consequences, but also of the Aprilias of the Aspar team of Bradley Smith and Nicolas Terol who close the front row.

Only sixth time instead for Marc Marquez who was also preceded by the Swiss Randy Krummenacher, surprise in qualifying, but still ahead of Esteve Rabat (3rd in the championship) and Efren Vazquez, like his teammate Pol Espargaro who also crashed in the last minutes.

The first Italian in the standings is the wild card Alessandro Tonucci with the Junior GP team ahead of his teammate Luigi Morciano. Simone Grotzkyj Giorgi is furthest behind, 20th, followed by Moretti (22nd), Savadori (24th), Gabrielli (25th), Tarozzi (26th), Pontone (28th), Marconi (30th) and Ravaioli (32nd) °) with the Lambretta.
