125cc – Mugello Race – Marc Marquez wins in the sprint
Marc Marquez took his first victory in the 125 world championship, beating compatriots Nicolas Terol and Pol Espargaro in a sprint today at Mugello. The Spanish driver of Red Bull Ajo Motorsport with the official Derbi took first position on the last lap, managing to keep the lead even in the final sprint where by just 39 thousandths he beat Terol who gained 4 points on Espargaro, third, for the championship standings.
For Marquez, as mentioned, it is the first career victory after having already won pole positions and several podiums in the previous two championships with KTM before moving to Derbi this year. Bradley Smith, however, did not make the podium and finished fourth despite the fastest lap in the race which allowed him to catch up on Terol and Espargaro, who were on the run in the first part of the race.
In fifth place Efren Vazquez, who preceded Randy Krummenacher, Esteve Rabat and the Japanese Tomoyoshi Koyama. However, there is no Sandro Cortese who crashed twice after winning pole position.
The first of the Italian drivers is Simone Grotzkyj Giorgi, 15th, who gained a point at the expense of Riccardo Moretti, 16th. Tonucci, Tarozzi and Pontone follow in the standings from 18th to 20th place, while Morciano, Savadori, Marconi, Ravaioli and Gabrielli were forced to retire.
