Julian Simon set the best time in 1'45.880 in the first free practice session of the Estoril Grand Prix in the 125cc class. The Bancaja Aspar Team rider, leader of the championship standings and close to winning the title, preceded Andrea Iannone by almost 1″, second and with two sponsors less on the fairing of his bike due to the vicissitudes of Misano Adriatico.

Behind the Abruzzo driver is Sergio Gadea, another Aspar driver, not Bradley Smith who crashed mid-session after a bad highside. Fourth is Marc Marquez with the first KTM, followed by Simone Corsi, Nico Terol, Sandro Cortese and Joan Olive.

Only 13th Pol Espargaro, while the other Italians are 24th with Lorenzo Zanetti, 28th Luca Marconi, 35th Luca Vitali. Lorenzo Savadori did not take to the track and was left without a bike due to the lack of budget of the Fontana Racing team which fields only Simone Corsi.
