Nico Terol obtained pole position for the Catalunya Grand Prix, his fourth of the season after those achieved in Qatar, Portugal and France. The Team Bankia Aspar driver achieved it with a time of 1'51"281, a time 402 thousandths better than that of teammate Hector Faubel. Behind the two Team Aspar drivers were Maverick Vinales (winner at Le Mans and 818 thousandths of a second behind) and the Frenchman Johann Zarco, the last of the drivers to be less than a second behind.

Fifth time for Efren Vazquez, the Spaniard from Derbi who lapped in 1'52"288, putting the Germans Sandro Cortese and Jonas Folger, and his compatriots Luis Salom, Sergio Gadea and Adrian Martin behind him. Eleventh is the British Danny Kent who precedes Alberto Moncayo, Jasper Iwema and Danny Webb.

The first of the Italian riders is Simone Grotzkyj Giorgi, eighteenth and with a gap from the top of 2"763. The other Italians in the ranking are Luigi Morciano 22nd, Francesco Mauriello 27th and Alessandro Tonucci 32nd.
